Senior Power Systems Engineer
About the Role
The Senior Power Systems Engineer specializes in the planning, analysis, design, and implementation of complex electrical power systems for mission-critical facilities, utility-scale infrastructure, industrial facilities, and large commercial developments. This position focuses on medium- and high-voltage power distribution, power generation, protection and controls, substations, and power system studies. The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer with extensive experience designing and coordinating electrical infrastructure for data centers, utility interconnections, power plants, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), substations, and other mission-critical facilities.
Responsibilities
- Design electrical infrastructure supporting mission-critical facilities, including hyperscale data centers, industrial facilities, and utility-scale projects.
- Design medium- and high-voltage power generation systems utilizing reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, renewable energy sources, and hybrid generation systems.
- Design and coordinate large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including utility-scale installations exceeding 10 MW.
- Design generator paralleling switchgear, synchronization systems, and associated control systems.
- Design and specify medium-voltage UPS systems and DC power distribution systems supporting critical facilities.
- Develop reliable power architectures for continuous-operation facilities requiring high system availability.
- Design low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical distribution systems.
- Develop one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, grounding plans, equipment layouts, cable routing, and power distribution drawings.
- Specify and coordinate medium-voltage switchgear, switchboards, motor control centers (MCCs), transformers, generators, UPS systems, protective relays, and DC power equipment.
- Perform service load calculations and equipment sizing in accordance with NEC, IEEE, NESC, utility requirements, and project specifications.
- Develop protection schemes for medium- and high-voltage systems, including relay protection, coordination, and protective device settings.
- Design AC/DC control schematics and wiring diagrams, generator paralleling control systems, and PLC/automation control philosophies.
- Coordinate SCADA integration and utility interconnection requirements.
- Support commissioning and startup activities.
- Perform engineering studies including short circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, load flow, voltage drop, motor starting, harmonic analysis, dynamic system modeling, and power quality studies using software such as SKM, ETAP, EasyPower, CYME, and AutoCAD Electrical.
- Provide engineering recommendations to improve reliability, resiliency, safety, redundancy, and operational performance.
- Design medium- and high-voltage substations and coordinate utility interconnections, including projects exceeding 100 MW.
- Coordinate protection philosophies with utility providers and develop utility coordination packages and technical studies.
- Lead and engineer complex electrical power projects from planning through construction.
- Prepare engineering reports, calculations, technical specifications, and construction documents.
- Perform site investigations and existing system evaluations.
- Provide construction administration including RFIs, shop drawing reviews, site observations, and punch list support.
- Mentor junior engineers and designers.
- Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, NFPA, NESC, utility standards, client requirements, and applicable codes and regulations.
- Maintain high standards for engineering quality, documentation, and QA/QC.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- 10+ years of experience designing electrical power systems.
- Extensive experience with medium-voltage power distribution, protection & controls, power system modeling and studies, utility coordination, switchgear, and generation systems.
