Senior Power Systems Engineer
12-month contract with a potential for extension. Hybrid position requiring local candidates in Raleigh, NC (3 days per week onsite in downtown office). W2 contract; no PTO or benefits. About the Role
The IT Telecommunications department is seeking a Senior IT Telecom Analyst / Senior Power Engineer to design, implement, test, and document complex AC & DC power solutions for Telecom infrastructure applications. This role requires a thorough understanding of AC & DC power systems, UPS & DC plant systems, environmental and alarm monitoring systems, grounding systems, and basic TCP/IP, routing, and switching. Network automation with programming and scripting is highly valued. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who thrives with minimal supervision and collaborates effectively in small Agile teams.
Responsibilities
- Design power solutions to address business needs, including planning, designing, implementing, testing, and documenting communication systems and network components.
- Develop processes to enable 1st and 2nd level teams to handle support issues while providing 3rd level advanced support as needed.
- Prepare engineering job packages (EJPs) with detailed parts/equipment lists, logical installation instructions, and documentation (e.g., drawings, network diagrams, shelf layouts).
- Ensure cost-effective system designs meet business needs with reliable and efficient service.
- Prepare and submit cost estimates, economic studies, and work orders for planned installations.
- Coordinate and lead team members to successfully implement projects.
- Maintain familiarity with current telecommunications technology and available facilities.
- Provide technical assistance to NOC, installation, and maintenance personnel.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or similar field with 6+ years of direct power engineering experience.
- In lieu of a bachelor’s degree: Associate’s degree with 10+ years of direct power engineering experience or high school diploma with 15+ years of direct power engineering experience.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaborate effectively within a team.
- Familiarity with the National Electric Code.
- Experience with 240/120 AC power systems, -48VDC power systems, and backup generating systems.
- Familiarity with grounding standards for communications shelters and towers.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, SharePoint, Teams).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with ServiceNow tools and processes.
- Agile environment experience.
- Experience with corporate documentation systems (e.g., Fusion or CASTPro).
- Understanding of basic engineering theories, research practices, and design issue evaluation.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam or Professional Engineer registration in North Carolina.
- Project management and planning experience, particularly in the utility industry.
- Hands-on experience with Telecom UPS & DC plant systems (e.g., Eltek, Vertiv, Powerware, Delta).
- Subject matter expertise in Telecom DC systems, including training preparation and presentation.
- Hands-on experience with Cisco routers/switches, Opengear, NetGuardian, Cambium/Nokia microwave, and Alcatel/Ciena optical transport devices.
- 2+ years of direct experience in Telecom field services or engineering.
- Knowledge of Agile methodology, Kanban, and Jira.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid schedule: 3 days per week in the downtown Raleigh office (local candidates only).
- Up to 5% travel for site visits and implementations.
Pay
$56.00 – $66.00/hour (W2 contract).
