Senior Physical Substation Engineer

Accountabilities

  • Developing and reviewing physical substation designs, including general arrangements, equipment layouts, elevations, grounding systems, conduit and cable designs, bills of materials, and cable schedules.
  • Performing electrical physical design activities for substations ranging from 4kV to 500kV.
  • Conducting independent QA/QC reviews of physical design deliverables and supporting reviews of protection and control documentation when required.
  • Interpreting and integrating vendor information into engineering packages and ensuring adherence to client and industry standards.
  • Preparing and validating engineering calculations using industry methodologies and specialized software tools.
  • Managing assigned tasks, coordinating project activities, and supporting schedule and budget compliance.
  • Monitoring project milestones and ensuring timely delivery of engineering outputs.
  • Providing technical guidance, coaching, and constructive feedback to less experienced engineers and designers.
  • Performing technical reviews and coordination checks of project deliverables to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintaining effective communication and strong working relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Assuming responsibility for the technical adequacy and quality of assigned engineering deliverables.
  • Supporting multiple concurrent projects within a dynamic and collaborative project environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in substation design, physical engineering, and/or QA/QC activities.
  • Extensive experience with utility substation standards and designs, particularly within high-voltage environments.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications.
  • In-depth understanding of utility and industry engineering standards, including experience applying client-specific design requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including experience preparing engineering calculations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships across teams and clients.
  • Leadership capabilities with experience mentoring and supporting engineering professionals.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
