Description

Step into the role of Senior Parks Maintenance Technician and help keep Durango’s parks beautiful and well-maintained. As a member of our Parks Division, you will help keep our parks, trails, cemetery, urban forest, and open spaces in excellent, clean, and safe condition for everyone to enjoy. You’ll work with a variety of equipment—from power tools to heavy machinery like backhoes, dump trucks, and farm tractors—to maintain our city’s greenery, landscapes, irrigation systems, and parks facilities. This outdoor role offers diverse daily tasks and the satisfaction of making a visible, positive impact on our community’s quality of life.

Essential Job Duties

  • Turf & Landscape Beds:
    • Test, diagnose, adjust, repair, and replace irrigation system components.
    • Maintain landscaping areas by irrigating, excavating, removing weeds, raking leaves, fertilizing, cultivating, and trimming shrubs.
    • Prepare and maintain annual flower beds, including planting flowers, weed removal, and irrigation.
  • Parks Grounds:
    • Maintain parks grounds through mowing, edge trimming, fertilizing, weed removal, land excavation, tree trimming, and building and maintaining fences.
    • Apply chemical insecticides and herbicides.
    • Install and maintain park and playground equipment and athletic fields.
  • General Park Maintenance:
    • Perform semi-skilled maintenance functions, including carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
    • Maintain parks buildings and restrooms, including paper pick-up and facility cleaning.
  • Cemetery:
    • Assist in site leveling, filling, and cemetery maintenance as necessary.
    • Dig and cover burial sites.
  • Equipment Operation & Maintenance:
    • Operate and maintain snow removal equipment to clear parking lots, walkways, and hard surface trails within the park system.
    • Use power tools for trail maintenance and other projects, including wood saws, chainsaws, leaf blowers, and weed trimmers.
    • Handle heavy equipment, such as backhoes, dump trucks, farm tractors, and Toolcats.
    • Assist in the repair and maintenance of all departmental maintenance equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A valid state Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one.
  • Two to three years of experience in building and grounds maintenance or equivalent education, training, and experience.
