About the role

The Senior Operations Engineer at NYISO ensures the reliable operation of New York’s bulk electric system by determining system reliability transfer limits, reviewing NYISO-controlled facilities, and developing engineering studies. This role supports system studies, compliance analysis, and technical recommendations for internal teams, market participants, and the public. The position involves participation in NERC, NPCC, regional, and NYISO study groups.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analytical engineering system studies, including:
    • NYISO seasonal operating studies
    • NERC, NPCC, and inter-regional study support
    • Transmission planning support (thermal, voltage, transient stability, short circuit studies, inter-regional transfer analysis, and reliability assessments)
  • Conduct detailed analysis of system events and disturbances.
  • Review system events for compliance with NERC, NPCC, and NYSRC standards.
  • Support regional market coordination through distribution factor calculations and evaluations.
  • Maintain detailed electric power system models for the NYCA, including neighboring areas for accurate study representation.
  • Review NYISO-controlled facilities, standards, and practices for installation, maintenance, and testing of bulk power protective relay systems.
  • Evaluate computer simulation programs and tools to ensure safe and reliable operations.
  • Prepare and maintain NYISO technical support documentation.
  • Advise and collaborate with engineers in review meetings to develop recommendations.
  • Provide technical support to Operations, Planning, and Market Monitoring staff.
  • Participate in internal and external committees, project teams, and Market Participant working groups.
  • Provide technical oversight to Associate Engineers.
  • Maintain the NYCA electric power system model in the NERC Interchange Distribution Calculator (IDC).
  • Administer IDC access for NYISO staff and coordinate data mapping between IDC and NYISO applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BS) in Electrical Engineering, with preference for coursework in power systems, electrical engineering, and power system components; Master’s Degree (MS) preferred.
  • Seven years of related industry experience, including knowledge of power systems and demonstrated ability to use power system applications software.
  • Proficiency in advanced power flow and transient stability applications software (PSS/e or PSLF) or fault current assessment applications (ASPEN One-Liner, etc.).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver effective presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including advanced calculus, modern algebra, and statistical theory.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical and scientific thinking to complex problems.
  • Intermediate competency in Windows, MS Office (spreadsheet, database), email, internet programs, and SAS (or similar) statistical analysis software.
  • Familiarity with dynamic recording devices, frequency and spectral (FFT) analysis software is desirable.

Work Environment

  • Moderate noise level in the work environment.
  • Regular contact with staff and the public.
  • Occasional travel for meetings, conferences, and training.
  • May require work on nights, weekends, or holidays.
  • Hybrid work arrangement: onsite at Rensselaer, NY, several days per week, with remote work options for remaining days. Responsiveness to business needs may require additional onsite presence.

Pay

Salary Range: $105,700 - $176,400 USD
