About the role

The Senior Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is the field-based scientific and clinical expert on current and future Johnson & Johnson Innovative products. This role serves as a strategic scientific partner, integrating multiple internal and external data sources to inform medical engagement, patient care, and territory strategy. The Senior MSL develops and enhances professional relationships with key thought leaders and healthcare provider teams, providing fair, balanced, objective, and non-promotional scientific information and education. The role also involves staying abreast of scientific and treatment landscape trends, critically evaluating emerging data, and supporting investigator-initiated studies in compliance with applicable policies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a scientific engagement plan for the territory aligned with Medical Affairs strategy, prioritized medical objectives, and approved core medical assets.
  • Engage in high-quality, two-way scientific exchange with key opinion leaders (KOLs) and healthcare professionals (HCPs) to challenge current thinking, serve as a resource, and understand perspectives on the treatment landscape while identifying trends, unmet needs, and educational gaps.
  • Identify and cultivate strong professional relationships with community and academic HCPs/KOLs to advance scientific credibility.
  • Utilize insights and MSL tools to develop a strategic approach for customer engagements, proactively uncovering gaps, risks, and opportunities to enhance medical impact.
  • Leverage AI tools and insights to enhance decision-making, streamline processes, and improve efficiency across core responsibilities.
  • Identify provider educational needs and address them with tailored, scientifically balanced responses that advance learning and deepen understanding.
  • Deliver relevant scientific data tailored to HCP needs through clear, effective dialogue and presentation, translating complex clinical evidence into meaningful discussions.
  • Collect and submit high-quality, actionable insights aligned with organizational strategic priorities to inform medical strategy and cross-functional discussions.
  • Provide point-of-contact support to investigators and internal partners for both company-sponsored and investigator-initiated studies.
  • Respond to unsolicited research/clinical inquiries from external stakeholders with scientifically sound, objective, and compliant information.
  • Execute the current Medical Affairs strategy and MSL priorities while balancing short-term execution with long-term objectives and adapting plans as needed.
  • Compliantly collaborate with internal stakeholders, including MSL field partners, R&D, Medical Affairs, clinical operations, and defined interactions with Sales and Marketing.
  • Demonstrate strong scientific acumen through self-study, journal clubs, educational seminars, congresses, and scientific discussions with peers.
  • Foster a culture of inclusion and belonging, increasing engagement, productivity, and innovation to reflect the diverse communities served.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of regulatory and healthcare compliance guidelines, corporate policies, and Medical Affairs SOPs.
  • Develop and implement a performance and development plan in collaboration with the direct manager, including leadership projects that contribute to medical planning and organizational capabilities.
  • Perform all administrative requirements (e.g., expense reports, documentation of activities) in a timely, accurate, and compliant manner.

Qualifications

  • A Doctorate-level degree or equivalent experience is required (e.g., PharmD, PhD, MD, Advanced Practice Providers). Postgraduate experience is required for doctoral candidates, with preference for therapeutic clinical experience.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience, including demonstrated success as an MSL.
  • Strong scientific/therapeutic expertise with skills in research, data analysis, clinical expertise, problem-solving, strategic thinking, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ability to support a defined territory with up to 70% travel, including in-territory visits and attendance at internal meetings, external congresses, and related events.
  • Must hold a valid U.S. driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Residency/fellowship experience.
  • Knowledge or experience in the therapeutic area (Dermatology/Immunology).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CoPilot, and remote technologies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to learning emerging technologies, such as AI.
  • Related clinical, research, or pharma work experience.

Pay

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $137,000.00 - $235,750.00.

  • Sick time: 40 hours per calendar year (48 hours for Colorado residents, 56 hours for Washington residents).

  • Volunteer Leave: 32 hours per calendar year.
  • Military Spouse Time-Off: 80 hours per calendar year.
