About the Role

The Sr. Medical Science Director/Sr. Medical Director provides clinical and scientific leadership for medical affairs, generating and communicating medical evidence to support healthcare decisions by practitioners, patients, and payers. This role requires exceptional communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills, representing the US Medical function in cross-functional teams and external engagements. The position demands flexibility, strategic prioritization, and a collaborative mindset to address complex, multidisciplinary challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and monitor medical strategies, plans, and tactics across the product lifecycle.
  • Provide clinically meaningful perspectives for regulatory and scientific communications.
  • Lead clinical study design and management.
  • Engage scientifically with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Plan congresses and develop medical/scientific content.
  • Implement strategy through medical tactics, leveraging expertise and insights.
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of medical strategy, clinical landscape, patient/caregiver needs, payer dynamics, and market trends.
  • Uphold high standards of compliance, ethics, and safety, prioritizing patient-centric actions.

Requirements

  • Advanced clinical/science degree (e.g., PharmD, PhD, MD).
  • Minimum 8+ years of relevant biopharmaceutical industry experience.
  • Understanding of or experience with Phase I–III and/or Phase IV drug development.
  • Experience across Medical Affairs domains, including data analysis, interpretation, medical writing, strategy development, and external engagement.
  • Knowledge of pre-approval drug development trials and/or post-marketing medical evidence generation, including controlled and observational study designs, data analysis, and clinical/health economic interpretations.
  • Understanding of the US healthcare environment, including payer landscape, marketplace dynamics, and evidence-based medicine practices.
  • Proven ability to develop strong relationships with external stakeholders (e.g., therapeutic area experts, organizations).
  • Strong teamwork, collaboration, interpersonal, and influencing skills; ability to establish rapport and influence without authority.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise and industry experience in Neuroimmunology.
  • Experience with data strategy, digital platforms (e.g., Adobe, Veeva, Salesforce), user research, and clinical trial recruitment tactics.

Location & Travel

This position is based in South San Francisco, CA, with up to 35% travel required.

Pay

The expected salary range for this position in South San Francisco, CA, is $198,600–$471,000. Actual pay will be determined by experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and company performance.
