About the role
A hands-on technical lead responsible for developing code-compliant, buildable, and well-coordinated mechanical designs for commercial construction projects. This position owns design execution from basis of design through permit and issued-for-construction (IFC) documents, working closely with Project Managers, field personnel, clients, contractors, and engineering teams. The role also provides technical mentorship to junior engineers and helps maintain strong QA/QC standards across projects.
Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design execution from basis of design through permit and IFC deliverables.
- Establish system selection, equipment sizing, control intent, and documentation strategies.
- Design and troubleshoot air-side systems, including VAV, DOAS, exhaust, pressurization, filtration, and heat recovery systems.
- Design and troubleshoot water-side systems, including hydronic plants, pumping systems, control valves, coils, and heat rejection systems.
- Apply California building codes, energy codes, AHJ requirements, and applicable local amendments.
- Review loads, design assumptions, duct and pipe sizing, equipment schedules, details, sequences, and system coordination.
- Perform thorough constructability and functionality reviews to ensure designs can be successfully installed and operated.
- Maintain consistent engineering and documentation standards.
- Support Project Managers with client, contractor, and engineer presentations and technical discussions.
- Participate in site walks and existing-condition investigations.
- Assist with developing and refining project scopes.
- Provide construction-phase engineering support, including submittal reviews, RFIs, and design clarifications.
- Coordinate with project teams to ensure designs integrate effectively with field installation.
- Direct and coordinate project-based engineering activities involving internal and external engineering teams.
- Mentor junior engineers in engineering fundamentals, applicable codes, design judgment, and documentation quality.
- Provide engineering leadership with feedback regarding training needs, team development, processes, and technical standards.
Requirements
- 7-10 years of experience in commercial construction.
- Four-year engineering degree or equivalent experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, equipment, installation standards, and engineering fundamentals.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with clients, contractors, engineers, and project teams.
- Strong knowledge of California and applicable local building codes.
- Proficiency with Carrier HAP, TRACE 700, EnergyPro, or equivalent HVAC/load calculation software.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD.
- Revit experience preferred.
- Previous experience with a mechanical contractor or engineering consulting firm preferred.
