About the role

The Surface Team at Microsoft is delivering new and amazing customer experiences by blending performance hardware with AI (Artificial Intelligence) computing. We are currently building the next generation of laptop and tablet devices, and Surface needs a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead teams through system architecture and design in a fast-paced product development environment. This role requires a solid mix of technical breadth and design experience to integrate mechanical and electrical subsystems into compelling system designs and customer experiences. Outstanding communication skills are essential to lead the team, set daily work direction, and sync across partner organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design activities during product development, including system layout, mechanical design, and evaluation of feature and cost trade-offs.
  • Oversee and coordinate the work of partner engineers and overseas engineering teams to ensure the right rate of progress and engineering quality.
  • Facilitate stakeholder discussions to ensure cross-discipline collaboration and identify and resolve conflicting engineering needs.
  • Identify the most significant program risks, develop mitigation plans, and communicate team progress through regular reports and reviews.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience.
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience.
  • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7+ years related technical engineering experience.
  • OR Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience.
  • OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience.
  • OR Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience in design of electro-mechanical assemblies, including familiarity with common manufacturing methods such as machining, injection molding, and metal forming.
  • Experience with system layout and architectural trade-offs for laptop and tablet designs.
  • Experience with collaboration and oversight of engineering development activities for overseas suppliers and partners.
  • Proficiency with Computer Aided Design (CAD), preference for Creo.

Pay

The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year. Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
