Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineer in R&D will design, develop, test, and improve mechanical systems, components, and products from concept through production. This role partners closely with cross-functional teams—including electrical, software, manufacturing, and quality—to deliver innovative, reliable, and cost-effective solutions aligned with business and customer needs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical components and systems for new and existing products
  • Take ownership of mechanical design activities from concept, prototyping, and testing through release
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, drawings, and technical documentation
  • Perform engineering analyses (tolerance, thermal, structural, FMEA, DFA/DFM)
  • Develop and execute test plans; analyze data and recommend design improvements
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure designs are producible and cost-effective
  • Support prototype builds, validation testing, and product launches
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
  • Work with suppliers and external partners as needed for component development
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards, regulations, and company procedures

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably in the R&D Environment

Position Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency with CAD tools (NX, Windchill / Creo is plus)
  • Experience with product development lifecycle and prototype testing
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes
  • Able to interpret and create engineering drawings and specifications
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and documentation skills
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills

Work Environment

Based at Lectra’s Tolland, CT facility. Occasional travel is required.
