About the role
Cubic Defence is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to contribute to multi-disciplinary product development teams. This role involves planning, designing, developing, and implementing mechanical designs, working closely with other engineering disciplines.
Responsibilities
- Conducts or participates in research, design, development and testing of mechanical hardware, including component modeling/analysis and tolerance analysis.
- Assesses the severity of problems, determines corrective action, resolves technical problems, performs fault isolation, and implements solutions.
- Lead activities related to product planning, product design and development, and manufacturing planning to support successful product realization.
- Develop and design mechanical components and subsystems suited to military training and its procurement, configuration management, quality assurance, and regulatory requirements.
- Specifies materials, equipment and supplies.
- Modifies existing engineering designs.
- Conducts prototype construction and test.
- Logs, compiles and evaluates engineering data.
- Ensure complementary product and manufacturing process design to ensure a product is appropriately designed for cost effective manufacturing through life.
- Facilitate transfer of products from design to manufacturing by generating a complete manufacturing package for manufacture in-house, at Cubic’s own international factory(s) or at sub-contractors.
- Provide support throughout the life cycle of the product to maintain the production of a quality product efficiently.
- Product development and design of mechanical components within the companies Design Process framework, generating product design, review, integration and test artefacts.
- Create, review, and maintain engineering drawings with proper application of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Support product development activities within PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems, including BOM management and document control.
- Participate in Product Design Reviews with internal and external reviewers to ensure that all products are designed and produced in line with best design and manufacturing practices to produce a quality product efficiently and effectively (right first time).
- Assemble prototypes and Engineering validation samples, check and cross-reference of the BOM’s, BOM structure, drawings, and part numbers to ensure accurate product definition and configuration control.
- Provide a formal report on the prototype and pre-production assemblies, identifying all issues that need attention along with recommendations to mitigate manufacturing risks.
- Generate the manufacturing package for production and sub-contractors that include: Assembly instruction (TP), to optimise the production process, to minimise overall timing costs and reduce manufacturing risk.
- Analyse the product assembly times to quantify labour content (man-hours) and subassembly process times.
- Identify, design and acquire jigs, tools and test equipment that will be required for production.
- Train the production teams on the assembly process techniques and use of unique equipment jigs and fixtures.
- Support the pre-production run processes managed by the Production Team Leader to ensure that the procedures in the TP’s are strictly followed or amended if necessary.
- Update the TP’s and recommend changes to BOM’s and drawings to reflect the desired best production practice.
- Investigate, evaluate, and introduce new product materials and manufacturing processes to improve product quality and reduce product’s life cycle cost.
- Evaluate and support investigations into field failures.
- Other duties as requested.
Requirements
- Four-year college degree in mechanical engineering or science discipline plus a minimum of five years of experience or an applicable Master’s degree with three years of experience.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks (or similar CAD tools).
- Familiarity with PLM systems and engineering documentation practices.
- Working knowledge of GD&T standards and application in engineering drawings.
- Understanding of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles.
- Advanced knowledge of mechanical design principles and techniques including product design and design for manufacture and assembly.
- Knowledge of finite element structural analysis, including calculations of stresses.
- Understanding of material properties and failure mechanisms.
- Good knowledge of plastic injection molded part design.
- Good knowledge of machined metal and sheet metal part design.
- Good knowledge of ruggedized product design.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Able to use typical office automation products such as work processing and spreadsheets.
- Able to prioritize work, complete multiple tasks and work under deadlines.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Desirable exposure to or coursework in thermal and structural analysis.
- Experience with simulation tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or similar.
- Knowledge of Model Based Engineering.
- Knowledge of industry suppliers and vendors.
- Workshop experience.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Collaborative mindset with a proactive approach.
