Senior Mechanical Engineer

Responsibilities

• Take any size job from inception through project closeout, including understanding and/or developing the project’s scope, fee, and schedule.
• Perform complex professional engineering tasks requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria, with assignments requiring independent judgment and application of non-routine, complex engineering problems.
• Apply intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields.
• Make decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, representing the company to resolve important questions and coordinate work.
• Use advanced techniques and modify theories, precepts, and practices of engineering, with knowledge gained from progressive experience and education.
• Handle complex engineering tasks and calculations with limited technical guidance on non-standard issues, coordinating with other disciplines to resolve conflicts.
• Prepare project-specific construction specifications and manage all aspects of construction administration.
• Prepare reports, specifications, plans, construction and design schedules, cost estimates, and Level II plans (including mechanical man-hour fee estimates).
• Use computer-aided design drafting to produce designs into routine final drawings and perform limited CADD operations.
• Research discipline-related code issues and present interpretations.
• Visit construction sites to review, monitor, and report progress, performing construction administration duties such as shop drawing review, attending site meetings, answering RFIs, preparing supplemental instructions, and writing status reports.
• Supervise, coordinate, and check the work of drafters, engineering designers, and other engineers, including mentoring staff members.
• Check one’s own work and work prepared by others.
• Coordinate all applicable project discipline drawings and specifications.
• Assist in preparing design budgets, marketing proposals, and cost estimates.
• Engage in client contact and communication pertaining to specific projects.
• Promote communication, cooperation, and quality among staff.
• Represent the firm professionally.
• Develop engineering proposals and agreements for assigned projects.
• Prepare forecasts of workload and resources for assigned projects and/or departments.
• Monitor project budgets and ensure profitability of projects.
• Ensure meeting project schedules, timely completion, and quality of assigned projects.
• Serve as a project manager or project engineer on assigned projects.
• Assist in marketing and presentations.
• Be active in professional trade organizations.

Requirements

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.
• Minimum of eight years of experience as an engineer in Mechanical Engineering.
• Must have passed the NCEES exam and be licensed as a Professional Engineer.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, Bluebeam, Trane Trace Load 700, model energy codes, and mechanical system/product selection and sizing software.

Skills

• Thorough knowledge of HVAC design processes, including planning, load and ventilation calculations, equipment selection, and construction document coordination.
• Supervision of building plumbing design efforts (thorough understanding of plumbing design not required).
• Supervision of project teams, including junior engineers and designers.
• Specific vision abilities, including close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
