Senior Mechanical Engineer
Arup is a global collective where individuality is encouraged, and diverse experiences, perspectives, and ideas are respected and connected. Our New York–based team is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support projects across the New York metro area and the broader Northeast region. You will contribute to the design and delivery of mechanical systems for high-performance, sustainable buildings in sectors such as commercial, residential, healthcare, science and technology, infrastructure, and mission-critical facilities.
About the role
In this role, you will lead mechanical engineering design for HVAC systems, hydronic plant design, airside distribution, ventilation strategies, and building performance optimization. You will address challenges related to energy efficiency, decarbonization, occupant comfort, resiliency, and urban constraints while navigating local codes, utility requirements, and climate-responsive design. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior engineers, and build strong client relationships to deliver integrated, sustainable solutions.
Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical engineering design across a variety of projects, including HVAC systems, hydronic plant design, airside distribution, ventilation strategies, and building performance optimization.
- Contribute to projects spanning commercial offices, residential developments, healthcare facilities, laboratories, infrastructure, and mission-critical environments.
- Deliver practical and innovative designs that respond to site constraints, sustainability targets, budget considerations, and constructability requirements.
- Coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams—including electrical, plumbing, structural, fire/life safety, and project management—to deliver integrated and high-quality solutions.
- Assist, supervise, and mentor junior engineers; provide timely feedback, recognition, and technical guidance.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships to support successful project delivery, repeat business, and long-term partnerships.
- Prepare drawings, specifications, technical reports, and basis-of-design documentation in alignment with applicable codes, standards, and best practices.
- Present technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences through meetings, workshops, and client presentations.
- Stay current with evolving technologies, sustainability strategies, and industry trends across the built environment.
- Support project delivery through ownership of quality, risk awareness, and commercial performance.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering required.
- Minimum 6 years of professional experience designing HVAC and building mechanical systems across a range of project types (e.g., commercial, residential, healthcare, science & technology, or infrastructure).
- Experience working within New York City and Northeast regulatory environments strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in Revit MEP; experience with load calculations, energy modeling, and mechanical system analysis is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines.
- Confident presenter with sound commercial awareness.
- Highly organized, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred.
Benefits
