About the role

The Senior Design Mechanical Engineer at FARO is a key contributor responsible for designing and analyzing mechanical systems, equipment, and packaging for FARO's metrology products. This position is hybrid, working out of either the Exton, PA office or the Lake Mary, FL office, with 2-3 days per week in the office.

Responsibilities

  • Support projects from concept to production in close coordination with related departments and vendors
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for product external design including industrial design, plastic molded part design, and user interfaces
  • Conduct feasibility studies of designs and concepts using engineering principles and FEA software
  • Develop and coordinate with vendors to provide finished work that meets requirements
  • Perform hands-on assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of prototypes to ensure design requirements are met
  • Analyze and refine high-level requirements
  • Develop assembly, calibration, and compensation techniques
  • Build Bill of Materials (BOMs) for manufacturing and assembly
  • Guide and assist operations with creation of assembly instructions
  • Act as a mentor to other mechanical engineers and designers in areas of expertise

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant mechanical/industrial engineering experience. Preference towards 10 years of relevant experience
  • Mechanical design using Solidworks or similar CAD package
  • Surface modeling using Solidworks or similar CAD package
  • Design of injection molded parts
  • Industrial design and evaluation of products for improved product user interaction (UI/UX)
  • Drawing generation in accordance with ASME Y14.5M Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Design of machined, sheet metal, and cast parts
  • System error budgets and tolerance stack-ups
  • Finite element analysis (FEA) using Solidworks Simulation or ANSYS

Qualifications

Preference given to candidates with experience in aerospace, automotive, construction, and public safety industries.

Skills

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles
  • Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD packages
  • Knowledge of surface modeling and injection molding processes
  • Ability to conduct feasibility studies and perform FEA analyses
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills
