Senior Mechanical/Design Engineer

About the role

The Senior Design Mechanical Engineer plays a crucial role in designing and analyzing mechanical systems, equipment, and packaging for FARO's metrology products. This position is hybrid, requiring 2-3 days per week in the office.

Responsibilities

• Support projects from concept to production in close coordination with related departments and vendors
• Serve as a subject matter expert for product external design, including industrial design, plastic molded part design, and user interfaces
• Conduct feasibility studies of designs and concepts using engineering principles and FEA software
• Develop and coordinate with vendors to provide finished work that meets requirements
• Perform hands-on assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of prototypes to ensure design requirements are met
• Analyze and refine high-level requirements
• Develop assembly, calibration, and compensation techniques
• Build Bill of Materials (BOMs) for manufacturing and assembly
• Guide and assist operations with creation of assembly instructions
• Act as a mentor to other mechanical engineers and designers in areas of expertise

Requirements

• A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering
• A minimum of 5 years of relevant mechanical/industrial engineering experience. Preference towards 10 years of relevant experience
• Mechanical design using Solidworks or similar CAD package
• Surface modeling using Solidworks or similar CAD package
• Design of injection molded parts
• Industrial design and evaluation of products for improved product user interaction (UI/UX)
• Drawing generation in accordance with ASME Y14.5M Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
• Design of machined, sheet metal, and cast parts
• System error budgets and tolerance stack-ups
• Finite element analysis (FEA) using Solidworks Simulation or ANSYS

Qualifications

• Strong problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Experience with project management tools and methodologies

Skills

• Proficiency in Solidworks or similar CAD packages
• Knowledge of surface modeling techniques
• Understanding of injection molding processes
• Experience with industrial design principles
• Ability to perform finite element analysis (FEA)
