Senior Marketing Communications Manager

About the role
The Senior Manager, Marketing & Communications is a senior strategic marketer responsible for bringing The Moth's brand to life—and helping more people discover it. Working closely with the VP of Marketing & Communications, you'll lead integrated marketing campaigns that build awareness of The Moth, grow audiences for our live events and podcasts, and deepen engagement with our mission. This role is ideal for a marketer who combines creative instinct with strategic thinking, ensuring every audience touchpoint reflects the creativity, authenticity, and emotional resonance that define The Moth.
Responsibilities
- Brand & Integrated Marketing Strategy
- Partner with the VP, Marketing & Communications to evolve and steward The Moth's brand voice, positioning, and visual identity across all audience-facing channels.
- Identify opportunities to increase The Moth's cultural relevance through partnerships, timely storytelling, and brand moments that introduce new audiences to our work.
- Lead integrated marketing campaigns for live events, podcasts, national initiatives, fundraising moments, and organizational priorities—from strategic brief through execution, optimization, and reporting.
- Develop creative briefs that translate business goals and audience insights into compelling campaigns.
- Ensure consistent messaging, storytelling, and creative excellence across every platform and market.
- Manage campaign budgets and partner with leadership to allocate marketing investments for maximum impact.
- Live Events Marketing
- Develop integrated marketing strategies that grow attendance across The Moth's live events, balancing national brand priorities with local audience insights.
- Partner with Production to monitor sales performance, optimize campaigns throughout the sales cycle, and identify opportunities for growth.
- Build community partnerships and promotional collaborations that expand awareness and diversify audiences.
- Podcast & Radio Audience Development
- Manage The Moth's marketing relationship with podcast distribution partners, identifying opportunities to expand reach, amplify programming, and grow listenership.
- Develop and produce audio promotional content that communicates The Moth's brand, mission, and programming to new and existing listeners.
- Drive listenership audio growth strategy in partnership with the VP, identifying opportunities to expand reach and drive downloads.
- Collaborate with Artistic and Production teams to surface key storytelling moments and programming milestones worth amplifying through promotional campaigns.
- Communications
- Own campaign messaging across email, web, social, paid media, and promotional materials, ensuring every audience touchpoint reflects The Moth's voice and strategic objectives.
- Partner with VP and external PR liaison to identify press opportunities throughout the year. Build media briefs, including messaging points, available assets, and talent opportunities.
- Oversee and contribute to email marketing strategy, including campaign messaging, segmentation approach, and editorial calendar, in partnership with the VP.
- Analytics & Performance
- Partner with Production to translate ticket sales, audience behavior, and campaign performance into marketing strategies that improve acquisition and engagement.
- Track and report on campaign performance across channels to identify what's working and where to optimize.
- Serve as the department's strategic thought partner on audience growth, retention, and engagement, using data and market insights to inform marketing priorities and investment decisions.
- Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Mentor junior marketing staff and interns, fostering a culture of creative rigor and accountability.
- Liaise with The Moth's digital marketing agency on paid social, Google Grants, and SEO campaigns.
- Collaborate with internal and external creative partners, providing clear briefs and thoughtful feedback.
- Partner across departments—Production, Development, Artistic, Workshops—to ensure marketing is aligned with organizational priorities and timelines.

In your first year, you'll help:

- Grow attendance at live events and expand podcast listenership through integrated campaigns.

- Identify new opportunities to grow The Moth's cultural presence through partnerships and creative storytelling.
Qualifications
Must-have
- 7+ years of experience developing integrated brand campaigns across owned, earned, and paid channels.
- Exceptional strategic writing and messaging skills, with demonstrated experience shaping brand voice and creative direction.
- Experience marketing live events, media, entertainment, arts, or cultural experiences, with a strong understanding of audience acquisition and conversion.
- Experience managing paid media campaigns directly or through agency partners.
- Proficiency in email marketing platforms (Salesforce Marketing Cloud preferred) and a strong grasp of email strategy and segmentation.
- Fluency with digital analytics tools, including social media insights and Google Analytics; ability to read data and draw actionable marketing insights.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal; ability to develop compelling creative briefs and articulate strategic recommendations.
- Outstanding project management skills and the ability to lead multiple complex initiatives simultaneously.
- Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends and to travel periodically, as required by The Moth’s live event schedule.
Nice-to-have
- Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, or a related field.
- Experience in the nonprofit arts, media, entertainment, or public media.
- Experience with audio or podcast audience development, or working with media distributors.
- Experience managing agency relationships and creative production.
- Experience managing or mentoring junior team members.
- Familiarity with Airtable or similar project management tools.
- A genuine passion for storytelling, live performance, public media, or building brands that matter.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit at a computer workstation for extended periods.
- Occasional evening/weekend attendance at live events, which may involve standing for extended periods.
- Ability to travel periodically.
Pay
The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $110,000 annually.
