Senior Maintenance Manager

Essential Job Summary: The Senior Maintenance Manager oversees multiple fleet maintenance locations, ensuring consistent execution of IWS maintenance standards, KPIs, and financial controls. This role drives consistency, develops maintenance leaders, stabilizes underperforming locations, and ensures fleet availability, safety compliance, and cost discipline.

  • Ensure consistent execution of IWS maintenance standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop maintenance leadership talent to support succession planning.
  • Drive high asset availability and uptime across refuse trucks, tractors, trailers, roll-off, and support equipment.
  • Lead structured root cause analysis (RCA) for repeat failures, downtime assets, and cost outliers.
  • Enforce standardized repair practices, PM intervals, and inspection protocols.
  • KPI Ownership & Performance Management:
    • Own area-level maintenance KPIs, including PM Efficiency, Labor Efficiency, Fleet Availability & Downtime, R&M Spend vs Budget, Backlog Aging & Work Order Management, DVIR Closure & Regulatory Compliance.
    • Conduct weekly and monthly performance reviews with Maintenance Managers.
    • Develop and execute corrective action plans for underperforming locations.
    • Ensure readiness and accuracy for Monthly Operating Reviews (MORs) and executive reporting.
  • Financial Stewardship:
    • Manage and control area-level maintenance spend within approved budgets.
    • Forecast labor, parts, and outside service costs with accuracy and discipline.
    • Identify cost-reduction opportunities without compromising safety or reliability.
    • Partner with Directors on capital recommendations based on asset condition and performance data.
  • CMMS & Process Discipline:
    • Enforce strict CMMS compliance across all assigned locations.
    • Audit work order quality and backlog health regularly.
    • Drive standard workflows and data discipline to support enterprise analytics.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Champion a safety-first culture across all maintenance locations.
    • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, environmental regulations, and company policies.
    • Lead safety audits, inspections, and corrective actions.
    • Maintain audit-ready documentation and regulatory records.
  • Vendor & Contractor Oversight:
    • Oversee execution of vendor, contractor, and OEM relationships at the area level.
    • Ensure vendor performance aligns with cost, quality, and turnaround expectations.
    • Support contract compliance and service-level adherence.
    • Partner with Procurement and Directors on supplier performance feedback.
    • Shedule: 6am to 5pm Monday through Friday alternating Saturday.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Minimum 7+ years of progressive fleet maintenance experience, including multi-site oversight.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Prior experience managing large, heavy-duty vehicle fleets (refuse, vocational, or similar).
  • Prior experience managing Maintenance Managers and/or Supervisors.
  • The Senior Maintenance Manager is expected to:
    • Operate with high ownership and accountability.
    • Lead with consistency, discipline, and professionalism.
    • Develop leaders—not just fix problems.
    • Serve as a stabilizing force during growth, acquisitions, and operational change.
    • Act as a trusted execution partner to Directors and Corporate Fleet Maintenance leadership.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Preventive maintenance programs.
    • Reliability and downtime reduction.
    • OSHA safety standards (LOTO, HECP, shop safety).
    • CMMS-driven maintenance operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, analyze performance data, and drive execution.
  • Advanced root cause problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication, coaching, and leadership presence.
  • Experience in refuse, waste, recycling, or heavy vocational fleet environments.
  • Leverage Lean, Six Sigma, or reliability-focused certifications.
  • Familiarity with enterprise maintenance KPIs and executive reporting cadence.
