Senior Manager, Indirect Tax Technology

Forvis Mazars is seeking an experienced tax professional to join the State and Local Tax practice in a market-focused, growth-minded role. This position requires indirect tax technical expertise, technology/transformation competency, and a commitment to ongoing development within the firm.

Responsibilities

  • Indirect Tax Engine Implementation and Tax Transformation Solutioning
    • Lead and manage the design, implementation, and configuration of indirect tax software solutions, focusing on tax engines such as AvaTax, ONESOURCE, and Vertex.
    • Provide tax technology expertise in discussions with clients and prospects, including tax/finance teams, executives, and IT to align solutions with client needs.
    • Communicate confidently with client management and teams.
    • Oversee preparation and review of internal and external deliverables, such as PowerPoint presentations, Visio workflows, functional business/tax requirements, agendas, budgets, meeting summaries, and client memoranda.
    • Assist in developing the delivery platform, including standardized project plans, templates (e.g., data dictionary, product mapping matrix), and test script documentation.
    • Apply indirect tax technical acumen to client projects and collaborate with Forvis Mazars subject matter specialists.
    • Demonstrate strategic thinking and execution aligned with the firm’s focus and future tax service line technologies.
  • Team Development
    • Participate in continuous learning and research to enhance technical expertise.
    • Assist in designing and implementing Indirect Tax Engine training curriculum, including learning tracks for each engine.
    • Train team members to expand their tax technology competencies.
    • Contribute to team growth strategy, including recruiting and retaining talent.
    • Provide mentorship to existing team members.
    • Assess technology needs for the practice.
  • Business Development & Strategy
    • Assist in developing cross-functional go-to-market strategies with Forvis Mazars Tax, Consulting, and Audit teams.
    • Develop marketing materials and serve as engagement leader for Indirect Tax Transformation services.
    • Collaborate with the Tax Transformation team to leverage technical competencies and enhance client experience.
    • Engage with firm leadership to expand internal knowledge of Indirect Tax Engine and Transformation services.
    • Represent the firm by authoring articles and presenting at seminars/webinars.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, tax, management information systems, computer science, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 7+ years of indirect tax engine and transformation experience, including knowledge of tax engines such as AvaTax, Vertex O-Series, and ONESOURCE.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, with strong analytical skills in Excel.
  • Experience with Alteryx or other automation solutions.
  • Experience representing tax in tax engine implementations for ERP and ecommerce systems.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft, NetSuite, Sage, SAP, and/or Workday preferred.
  • General understanding of the tax cycle and workflows.
  • Ability to travel as needed to serve clients.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CMI in Sales and Use Tax from the Institute for Professionals in Taxation.
  • Broad range of indirect tax knowledge, including compliance and technical expertise.
  • Process and technology experience in an indirect tax function.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Aptitude for process improvement, data manipulation, and indirect tax systems.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to multitask.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.

Pay

Salary ranges for this role vary by location and are based on experience, education, and skill set. Below are the salary ranges for select markets:

  • Colorado: $123,400 – $281,900
  • New York: $148,100 – $307,500
  • California: $135,700 – $307,500
  • Maryland: $123,400 – $281,900
  • Massachusetts: $135,700 – $281,900
  • Illinois: $123,400 – $281,900
  • New Jersey: Salary range available upon request.

Non-exempt/hourly positions may be eligible for overtime pay. Forvis Mazars reserves the right to adjust salary ranges based on business needs.
