Senior Manager - Accounting and Financial Reporting
TIAA’s Corporate Controller group is seeking an experienced Senior Manager to lead statutory accounting and financial reporting for our insurance and reinsurance operations. This role ensures accuracy in statutory accounting and reporting, oversees the general ledger close process, and maintains compliance with statutory requirements. The Senior Manager will lead a small U.S.-based team and collaborate with India-based resources while serving as a key partner to senior leadership on technical accounting matters.
Responsibilities
- Manage the close process for insurance and reinsurance activities, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
- Review and approve journal entries prepared by team members within the general ledger, ensuring proper support, classification, and compliance with accounting policy.
- Maintain strong controls over journal entry preparation, review, and approval workflows.
- Oversee balance sheet and other reconciliation processes, ensuring timely, accurate, and well-documented reconciliations.
- Review and resolve reconciling items, escalating significant issues as needed.
- Serve as the Financial Reporting Owner for various operating subsidiaries to ensure proper accounting on TIAA’s financial statements and associated capital needs.
- Drive efficiency improvements in close, reconciliation, and reporting workflows, including automation and standardization across U.S. and India teams.
- Coordinate with external auditors and manage audit requests for insurance and reinsurance activities.
- Oversee disclosures and schedules within TIAA’s annual statement (Blue Book and Green Books) and audited financial statements.
- Handle U.S. statutory accounting for Bermuda-based insurance subsidiaries, collaborating with Bermuda service providers, auditors, and regulators.
- Research, interpret, and document technical accounting positions on complex insurance and reinsurance transactions, coordinating with the Accounting Policy team.
- Prepare and review technical accounting analysis for insurance/reinsurance transactions (e.g., premium accounting, reserves, ceded/assumed reinsurance treaties).
- Manage, mentor, and develop a U.S.-based team while leveraging India-based resources, including setting performance goals and supporting professional development.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls over accounting and financial reporting for insurance and reinsurance activities.
- Partner cross-functionally with Actuarial, FP&A, Tax, Treasury, and Legal teams.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience with life and annuity insurance companies, including Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and Annual Statements (Blue Book and Green Book).
- Certified Public Accountant (preferred).
- Experience in the financial services industry.
- Ability to manage parts of the monthly general ledger close process, including journal entries and reconciliations.
- Experience maintaining and strengthening internal controls, including audit work papers and supporting schedules.
- Experience working with internal and external auditors.
- Leadership and team management experience, including talent development and workload management across multiple filing deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for presenting financial results to senior leadership and external stakeholders.
- Ability to analyze financial statements, general ledger detail, and supporting schedules to identify discrepancies and investigate root causes.
- Ability to research and apply accounting guidance for reporting requirements.
- Strong knowledge of reinsurance accounting and its statutory reporting implications.
- Knowledge of GAAP and Bermuda Statutory & Economic Balance Sheet accounting and reporting.
- Background in driving process improvements, including automation and data analytics to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy.
- Strong project management capabilities, including experience managing cross-functional teams through complex regulatory filings and system implementations.
- Experience collaborating with Actuarial, Finance, Tax, Treasury, and Accounting Policy teams.

Pay
Base Pay Range: $119,000/yr – $150,000/yr. Actual base salary may vary based on relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include participation in an incentive program linked to performance.
