About the role

Under general supervision, an incumbent performs a variety of journey-level building maintenance and repair work. This includes inspecting buildings to determine repair needs, planning and laying out jobs, and estimating material and staffing costs for work to be performed.

This role differs from other Senior Maintenance Mechanic I positions in that assignments may span all aspects of building, equipment, and grounds maintenance and repair, rather than focusing on a single trade or skill. Work is typically assigned through written or oral instructions, and the incumbent may work independently, as part of a crew, or as a lead worker on specific projects. The role may also involve supervising lower-level maintenance and labor employees.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect buildings to identify repair needs.
  • Plan and lay out maintenance and repair jobs.
  • Estimate costs for materials and staffing requirements.
  • Perform journey-level maintenance and repair work across multiple trades.
  • Determine the best methods, techniques, materials, and tools for completing projects.
  • Work independently, as part of a crew, or as a lead worker on projects.
  • Supervise lower-level maintenance and labor employees as needed.
  • Ensure work meets trade standards upon completion.
  • Perform related work as required.

Qualifications

The journeyman is proficient in the skills and practices of a variety of trades, with full knowledge of the principles, tools, and techniques used. Work is performed with minimal supervision, though the supervisor may review overall work to ensure compliance with trade standards.
