Under the direction of the Department of Physics leadership staff, the Senior Machinist will operate a variety of stationary tools to produce one-of-a-kind prototype and beta components for research apparatus, both on the Princeton campus and at remote locations.
Responsibilities
- Utilize typical stationary shop tools to cut, form, and finish desired parts; perform measurements and inspection of machined parts
- Operate a variety of saws, presses, shears, and sheet metal brakes
- Interpret drawings and sketches, applying written guidance and verbal interactions with clients to produce prototypes
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational technology trade school or certification a plus
- Five or more years of verifiable experience in a prototyping or production machine shop operating knee mills, engine lathes, drill presses, and manual threading tools
- Extensive knowledge of tool speeds and feed rates to produce acceptable parts from brass, copper, steel, and stainless steel
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, dimensions, and tolerances
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues
- Commitment to customer service, quality control, high personal standards, ethics, and inclusion
- Proficiency with personal computers and technology skills
- Good attendance record, conflict avoidance, and willingness to accept constructive criticism for self-improvement
- Prioritize safety and promote a safe work environment; understand and use necessary PPE
Preferred Qualifications
- Exposure to or proficiency with SolidWorks and computer-aided manufacturing software
- Experience with torch brazing and gas-tungsten arc welding
- Experience working with specialized materials, especially OFHC copper and titanium
Physical Requirements
- Ability to climb a six-foot stepladder to take dimensions from existing experiments and operate shop lifting tackle to load lathe chucks and large work-pieces
- Capable of working an eight-hour day in a standing position with appropriate rest breaks
- Ability to manually lift 50 pounds from the floor
Pay
$77,000 to $83,000 per year

- Standard weekly hours: 40.00
- Eligible for overtime: Yes
- Probationary period: 90 days
