Senior/Lead Software Engineer
About the role
This role supports State and Local IT Support Projects based in Fairmont, West Virginia, focusing on applications like GST's Assessor Assistant, Dog Tag, Online Filing, and Sheriff Tax. The role involves the ongoing support, enhancement, and maintenance of both current and legacy applications, websites, and supporting infrastructure using Microsoft-based technologies.
Responsibilities
- Provide application support, troubleshooting, and user training for legacy systems to ensure continuity of service for mission-critical applications.
- Maintain and update reports associated with GST applications using tools like Crystal Reports.
- Develop and maintain databases, including design, implementation, optimization, and administration.
- Administer and support websites, including permissions, ownership, indexing services, logs, usage statistics, and content management (using ASP.NET and WYSIWYG editors).
- Produce and maintain comprehensive technical documentation such as requirements, design specifications, and user guides.
- Identify, document, and prioritize technical debt and make tradeoff recommendations to stakeholders.
- Design, develop, enhance, and maintain Windows-based and web applications using Microsoft development technologies.
- Provide mentoring and direction to junior software developers.
- Provide Windows desktop, server, and printer support, as required, to end users.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience)
- Over ten years of relevant professional experience
- Proven experience developing applications using C#, ASP.NET, VB6, and VB.NET
- Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Access
- Experience with legacy applications, including report development and maintenance using Crystal Reports
- Experience with secure coding and development practices
- Experience administering and supporting IIS-hosted applications and services
- Working knowledge of virtualized environments and Virtual Machines (VMs)
- Proficiency using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for querying, troubleshooting, and database administration
- Experience using GitHub for source control, collaboration, and version management
- Experience with Windows system administration
- Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical users, including government and public-sector stakeholders
