About the role
X-energy LLC is seeking a Senior Heat Exchanger Specialist to join its team. This role is responsible for guiding specification, selection, and design of heat exchangers for various mechanical process and power generation system applications.
Responsibilities
- Direct the planning for analyses to assess heat exchangers' functions and ensure they meet technical specifications and requirements.
- Supervise computations using hand calculations and analytical tools for structural, thermal, hydraulic, and other calculations.
- Develop and manage engineering changes according to approved procedures.
- Provide guidance and assistance in designing and developing mechanical systems and components within expertise.
- Understand nuclear safety implications and coordinate with stakeholders/systems engineers.
- Select components based on requirements, interfaces, design bases, and industry codes and standards.
- Author and maintain X-energy design standards and guides related to heat exchangers.
- Lead project management tasks and oversee procurement of materials, equipment, and services.
- Review and verify compliance of procured services and materials with contract specifications.
- Support the safety culture and ensure quality integration into all System Engineering processes.
- Manage system and project risks and ensure they are mitigated.
- Work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams and provide independent reviews of engineering deliverables.
- Teach and mentor more junior team members.
- Stay updated on industry trends and best practices.
- Set technical direction at the enterprise level through developing technology or discipline-specific roadmaps, best practices, and design criteria.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited university.
- Up to 15+ years of relevant experience (Level V).
- Up to 20+ years of relevant experience (Level VI).
- Master's degree in engineering or related field (may include academic experience).
- Ph.D. in engineering or related field (may include academic experience).
- Previous experience at X-energy exceeding performance standards.
- Experience with mechanical process equipment design, procurement, installation, and operation, including heat exchangers.
- Experience with authoring and maintaining company design standards and guides related to heat exchangers.
- Systems or Design Engineering experience in mechanical system development projects.
- Knowledge of system requirements management, verification, and Systems Engineering processes.
- Understanding of industry codes and standards, such as TEMA, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, API, and HEI.
- Thermal and fluid dynamics expertise, including heat transfer principles, thermodynamics, and fluid flow.
- Experience with heat exchanger types and design, including shell and tube, plate, air-cooled, and specialty designs.
- Performance evaluation and thermal analysis skills.
- Vendor management experience.
Qualifications

- Thorough understanding of industry codes and standards, such as TEMA, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, API, and HEI.
- Knowledge of system requirements management, verification, and Systems Engineering processes.
- Experience with heat transfer principles, fluid properties, phase changes, pressure drop calculations, and thermal expansion considerations.
- Ability to prepare and review technical specifications, thermal design calculations, datasheets, and procurement documents for heat exchangers and components.
- Understanding of fouling mechanisms, cleaning methods, and maintenance strategies.
- Experience with design and operation of mechanical systems, including steam, feedwater, condensate, HVAC, fire protection, drainage, compressed air, services, water-based systems, or nuclear systems.
- Knowledge of nuclear power plant licensing, regulatory, quality, and safety requirements.
- Experience with design and operation of mechanical systems, including steam, feedwater, condensate, HVAC, fire protection, drainage, compressed air, services, water-based systems, or nuclear systems.

- Strong grasp of heat transfer mechanisms and calculations.
- Expert understanding of fluid properties, phase changes, pressure drop calculations, and thermal expansion considerations.
- Thermal analysis and modeling expertise.
- Experience with thermal modeling, performance prediction, and simulation of heat exchange processes.
- Experience with design specifications preparation and review.
- Understanding of fouling mechanisms, cleaning methods, and maintenance strategies.
- Experience with design and operation of mechanical systems, including steam, feedwater, condensate, HVAC, fire protection, drainage, compressed air, services, water-based systems, or nuclear systems.

Pay
Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and may vary based on location and region. Please refer to the salary range for this position: Level V: $170,000- $195,000; Level VI: $210,000- $235,000.
Schedule
Full-time - Exempt.
Location
Rockville, MD or Houston, TX.
Travel
Up to 10% as needed.
Hours
8:00am-5:00pm ET, Monday-Friday.
