DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Policing athletic fields / facilities, cleaning and maintaining surrounding facilities.
  • Trash pick-up, raking, shrub and tree pruning, planting, trimming, fertilizing, and general upkeep of athletic fields and facilities.
  • Checking irrigation systems, installing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation system lines, heads, and controllers.
  • Assisting in the inspection of contractor projects.
  • Prepping and maintaining athletic sports surfaces and running areas.
  • Using a variety of hand tools, operating an EZ-GO cart, and driving District vehicles.
  • Communicating effectively with high school coaches, athletic director, and maintenance staff.
  • Maintaining a detailed written log of activities performed and the amount of time spent on each activity.
  • Working independently with little or no immediate supervision and making proper decisions using sound judgment.
  • Calibrating seed and fertilizers, planting seed or fertilizing turf, pruning trees and shrubs according to Arizona Landscape Professional standards.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Any combination of training, education, or experience equivalent to one (1) year experience at the Maintenance worker I level or grounds maintenance experience.

LICENSED REQUIREMENTS

Valid Arizona Driver’s License. Possession of an Arizona pest Control Applicator certification, possessing both turf and ornamental status and weed control (E and F) may be required for some positions in this classification. Must possess, or obtain within one year of hire, one or more of the five following certifications: Certified Landscape Auditor, Professional Ground Certification, Arizona Certified Professional District Cal-Sense Controller/Water Management, Training or completion of Extension Turf Grass Certification from University.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of proper landscape, industry standards to plant and prune trees and shrubs. Shared commitment to quality and continuous learning and improvement. Safety procedures; inventory principles; applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and standards; recordkeeping principles; mathematical principles; safe work practices.

SKILLS

Work independently with little, or no immediate supervision, as well as the ability to make proper decisions using sound judgment. Athletic field layout, striping and chalking. Pitcher’s mound maintenance. Bermuda and Rye grass management. Calibrate spreaders for application of liquid and granular fertilizer, herbicides, and warm and cool season grass seed. Plant and prune trees and shrubs according to Arizona Landscape Professional standards. Follow department policies and procedures; safety procedures and practices; traffic control methods. Learn, understand, and operate the District’s Cal-Sense Irrigation System. Perform sprinkler maintenance; repair lines, heads. Operate all related landscape maintenance equipment including chain saws and other equipment weighing up to 80 lbs. Operate a personal computer to check e-mail. Safely operate EZ-Go cart and drive District vehicles. Lift, empty and carry trash bags or cans weighing approximately 50 lbs. Operate telephone and radio communications equipment properly. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other departments, and school staff. Demonstrate the willingness to assume ownership in completion of assigned tasks. Complete work orders, and safety checklists in a complete and readable manner. Maintain regular consistent attendance and punctuality.
