Senior Equipment Repair Specialist

About the role

This position oversees personnel management, financial administration, equipment maintenance, and custom fabrication for research support within MCG-Biomedical Maintenance & Utility. Responsibilities include staff recruitment, training, budgeting, procurement, preventive maintenance, and repair of laboratory equipment.

Responsibilities

• Personnel: Manage recruitment, professional development, performance evaluations, and cross-training of support staff. Maintain personnel records and update job descriptions as needed.
• Business/Financial Administration: Oversee short/long-term financial planning, procurement, invoicing, expenditure tracking, leave approvals, travel coordination, and budget development. Manage asset and space inventory, including yearly audits and surplus requests.
• Equipment Maintenance: Install, repair, and certify laboratory research equipment, including refrigeration devices, centrifuges, autoclaves, biological safety cabinets (BSCs), and specialized research tools. Perform preventive maintenance and emergency repairs on shop equipment.
• Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs): Coordinate tracking, repairs, and yearly recertification of ~400 BSCs. Test and certify BSCs using thermal anemometers, spectrophotometers, and direct inflow measurement equipment in accordance with NSF/manufacturer standards.
• Custom Fabrication: Design and fabricate research equipment and accessories using tools such as XYZ/CAD milling machines, lathes, welders, band saws, and chemical fume hoods. Consult with research faculty to meet individualized needs.
• Other: Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Associate's degree in a related field and 3+ years of laboratory equipment repair experience, or
• High school diploma/GED and 5+ years of laboratory equipment repair experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Manufacturer training for BSC certification, HVAC systems, or laboratory design.
• Advanced electrical AC/DC component-level experience.

Skills

• Knowledge: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, databases, and technical troubleshooting.
• Abilities: Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication; detail-oriented prioritization; confidentiality; supervision; budget development; mechanical/electrical troubleshooting; and teamwork.

Schedule

Days; Monday–Friday (work outside standard business hours may be required).

Pay

Pay Band: B11. Salary commensurate with qualifications within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint).
