SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER

Location: Air Quality Division, 1110 W. Washington Street, Phoenix, AZ 85007

Salary ranges:
Associate Environmental Engineer (Grade 28): $90,000 – $95,000
Senior Environmental Engineer (Grade 29): $105,000 – $115,000
Principal Environmental Engineer (Grade 30): $130,000 – $135,000

This position is available for full-time remote work within Arizona, including virtual office arrangements.

About the role

We have an immediate opening for an Environmental Engineer (Associate, Senior, Principal) within ADEQ’s Air Quality Division. The Senior Environmental Engineer will support the Air Quality Permits Team by drafting enforceable air-quality permits and ensuring compliance with state and federal air-pollution laws and regulations. The role includes reviewing and processing detailed technical reports from the regulated community.

Responsibilities

• Lead projects and identify resources.
• Review technical documents to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
• Review and evaluate complex permit applications and reports.
• Draft permits and technical support documents based on applicable environmental regulations.
• Participate in site visits, data collection, inspections, and investigations related to environmental topics.
• Provide technical support and assistance to staff, the regulated community, and the public.
• Assist in preparing environmental guidance documents.
• Conduct technical outreach and presentations on environmental topics.
• Mentor junior staff, audit technical work, and participate in hiring.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental or Chemical Engineering.
• Professional Engineer License through the Arizona Board of Technical Registration or an equivalent reciprocal jurisdiction.
• Experience requirements by grade level:
  • Associate Environmental Engineer (Grade 28): 8+ years of engineering experience (Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years).
  • Senior Environmental Engineer (Grade 29): 12+ years of engineering experience (Master’s degree preferred; may substitute for 2 years).
  • Principal Environmental Engineer (Grade 30): 15+ years of engineering experience (Master’s degree or higher required).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• State and federal environmental regulations pertaining to air quality, including the Clean Air Act and Arizona Administrative Code.
• Environmental and/or chemical engineering principles and practices.
• Chemical composition, structure, properties, and environmental processes/transformations.
• Air pollution control technologies and performance testing practices.
• Interpreting and applying complex environmental regulations.
• Drafting complex permits and technical support documents.
• Compiling and presenting complex technical information to non-technical audiences.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Google Suite.
• Attention to detail, quality assurance, and adherence to standard work.
• Strong communication, research, complex problem-solving, and facilitation skills.
