Senior Engineer - Substation Physical
Overview
Our client, a leading provider of power system protection, automation, and integration solutions, is seeking a Senior Engineer - Substation Physical to lead the design and execution of complex substation projects, provide technical leadership and mentorship, and support customers throughout the project lifecycle. The ideal candidate brings 12+ years of power systems experience, expert knowledge of substation physical design, a PE license, and a proven track record managing engineering projects, client relationships, and multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities
- Serve as a technical expert in the design and application of substation physical engineering solutions.
- Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to engineers, specialists, and technicians.
- Research, develop, and implement innovative engineering solutions, processes, and best practices.
- Lead the development and review of project scopes, budgets, schedules, and deliverables to ensure high-quality execution.
- Manage engineering projects through the full project lifecycle, from concept and design through installation, commissioning, and operational support.
- Create detailed substation physical designs, electrical layouts, bill of materials, and project estimates.
- Support customers with engineering design, configuration, validation, testing, commissioning, and implementation of engineered solutions.
- Collaborate with clients, utilities, consultants, and project stakeholders to deliver successful project outcomes.
- Promote environmental, health, and safety initiatives while ensuring compliance with company safety standards and practices.
- Lead technical training efforts and support the professional development of engineering team members.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 12+ years of experience with electric power systems or equivalent utility, consulting, or engineering industry experience.
- Expert-level knowledge in substation physical design and engineering principles.
- Extensive experience designing electrical power substations, including equipment layouts, grading, drainage, foundations, and constructability considerations.
- Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience managing complex engineering projects, budgets, schedules, and client deliverables.
- Excellent written, verbal, and technical documentation skills.
- Able to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving project requirements.
- Able to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% as required.
- Able to successfully complete a background check and drug screening.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Supervisory or team leadership experience.
- Experience working for an electrical utility, engineering consulting firm, or system integrator.
- Extensive customer-facing experience within the power systems industry.
- Experience using project management or project tracking software.
