Senior Engineer, Civil

About the Role

This position manages complex civil engineering issues related to new project development, redevelopment, expansions, and renovations. The role facilitates creative and cost-effective solutions to project engineering requirements while aligning with the Simon business model and objectives. The incumbent interacts with Simon team members (Development, Leasing, Property Management, Project Management, Design, etc.) to establish project-specific goals and solutions, presents proposed designs to senior management, and translates design direction to the consultant team for implementation. While most work stems from the development pipeline, attention is also given to special projects arising from operational or legal issues. The Civil Engineering group is part of the Simon Construction Group, which oversees design and project management in the development process.

Responsibilities

• Sponsor all engineering issues during the design and construction phases, reinforcing project goals while respecting budget and schedule.
• Manage technical consultants, including civil engineers, geotechnical consultants, traffic engineers, and land surveyors, to ensure design quality and timeliness meet company, regulatory, and stakeholder needs.
• Prepare detailed Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for land surveying, civil engineering, traffic engineering, geotechnical investigations, and other site-related services. Review proposals for accuracy and completeness.
• Prepare contracts and amendments to engage consultants, manage fees within the project budget, and provide ongoing budget updates to the project manager, including forecasted reallocations for unexpected work.
• Address right-to-build issues by collaborating with development staff, in-house and local counsel, and consultants to identify and resolve development/construction challenges. Represent the company in public zoning and regulatory hearings to secure desired outcomes.
• Coordinate engineering documents with other design elements and departments to minimize construction conflicts and resolve issues with minimal supervision.
• Work with existing properties to address site engineering and technical concerns, providing recommendations to management and company representatives as needed.
• Travel to project locations for meetings, hearings, and construction phase visits as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Landscape Architecture, or Land Surveying. Professional licensure preferred.
• 15 years of experience in civil engineering, site planning, and design.
• 5 years of experience supervising projects and/or managing the work products of other engineers.
• Working knowledge of all technical aspects of civil engineering, land surveying, and related segments of land development and property management.
• Working knowledge of retail development processes and regulatory requirements for real estate and retail projects.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
• Demonstrated experience with budgeting and organizational planning.
