Senior Engineer, Civil

About the Role

This position manages complex civil engineering issues related to new project development, redevelopment, expansions, and renovations. The role facilitates creative and cost-effective solutions to project engineering requirements while aligning with Simon’s business model and objectives. The incumbent collaborates with Simon team members (Development, Leasing, Property Management, Project Management, Design, etc.) to establish project-specific goals and solutions, presents proposed designs to senior management, and ensures successful implementation by the consultant team. While most work supports the development pipeline, attention is also given to special projects arising from operational or legal issues. The Civil Engineering group is part of the Simon Construction Group, which oversees design and project management in the development process.

Responsibilities

• Sponsor all engineering issues during design and construction, reinforcing project goals while respecting budget and schedule.
• Manage technical consultants (civil engineers, geotechnical consultants, traffic engineers, land surveyors) to ensure design quality and timeliness meet company, lender, partner, and regulatory agency standards.
• Prepare detailed Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for land surveying, civil engineering, traffic engineering, geotechnical investigations, and other site-related services. Review proposals for accuracy and completeness.
• Prepare contracts and amendments to engage consultants, manage fees within project budgets, and provide ongoing budget updates to the Project Manager, including forecasted reallocations for unexpected or out-of-scope work.
• Address right-to-build issues by collaborating with Development staff, in-house/local counsel, and consultants to identify development/construction challenges, create solutions, and secure approvals. Represent the company in public zoning and regulatory hearings.
• Coordinate engineering documents with other design elements and departments to minimize construction conflicts and resolve issues with minimal supervision.
• Support existing properties by addressing site engineering and technical concerns, providing recommendations to management and company representatives.
• Travel to project locations as needed for meetings, hearings, and construction phase visits.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Landscape Architecture, or Land Surveying. Professional licensure preferred.
• 15 years of civil engineering experience in site planning and design.
• 5 years of experience supervising projects and/or managing the work products of other engineers.
• Working knowledge of civil engineering, land surveying, and land development/property management technical aspects.
• Familiarity with retail development processes and regulatory requirements for real estate and retail projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
• Proven experience with budgeting and organizational planning.
