About the role
The Senior EMG Technician provides technical, ancillary, administrative, and leadership support to the Chief EMG Technician and the Neurology department. The position requires a strong background in EMG/nerve conduction equipment operation and experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
Responsibilities
- Performs common and uncommon NCS in a highly skilled, patient-appropriate manner.
- Recognizes and takes reasonable steps to eliminate physiological and non-physiological artifact.
- Performs NCS in the ICU or other hospital units, understanding the special technical requirements of these areas.
- Updates patient demographics in electronic medical chart; obtains accurate patient history and assesses the age specific needs of each patient.
- Prepares patient for exams as required and insures patient safety, comfort and modesty at all times.
- Outlines the nature of the procedures and tests with the patient; answers any concerns or refers the patient to a nurse or physician if necessary.
- Determines the electrodiagnostic studies to perform based on the requisition. Ensures that exams requested match patient condition and/or history and communicates with nurses and physicians regarding any questions or specific clinical aspects of the tests.
- Sets up equipment as necessary and performs techniques. Understands the interface between NCS equipment and other electrophysiological devices and procedures. Knowledgeable of filter settings and EDX equipment settings.
- Removes, discards, or cleans Nerve Conduction electrodes in accordance with universal precautions.
- Enters and records all patient charges for studies performed. Completes and forwards charge slips for patient billing.
- Maintains a high standard of cleanliness in the testing rooms. Prepares testing rooms with clean linen and all necessary equipment and supplies. Ensures the proper care and sterilization of reusable electrodes, testing rooms and associated areas.
- Provides instruction to other EMG Technologists, residents and fellows, as deemed necessary by and under supervision of an EDX physician. Provides mentorship and guidance to other EMG Technicians. In the absence of the Chief Technician, supervises other technicians to ensure safe and efficient patient care.
- Ensures sufficient and appropriate inventory of EMG-related supplies. Conducts quality control testing of equipment as necessary. Ensures the proper maintenance and function of the equipment through interaction with both internal and service vendors to maximize equipment up-time, patient care, and in order minimize dollar impact to the hospital. Troubleshoots software or any related issues to current interface network with IT and EMG EDX Machine Vendors; following protocols making decisions in conjunction with managers should unexpected expenses arise due to such events.
- Aids in the scheduling of EMG procedures or follow-ups. Performs related clerical duties as needed, such as filing, faxing, mailing, etc.
- Participates in continuing education programs and workshops; reviews and keeps abreast of field standards via subject-related publications and articles. May research articles for lecture presentations for the physicians. Attends neuromuscular rounds and resident rounds as requested.
- Performs patient focused customer service and ensures the department standards are met appropriately and achieved. Communicates patient complaints professionally to the appropriate supervisor. Keeps discussions around patients to a minimum and ensures that patients are not subjected to departmental conversations and/or any inappropriate behavior. Handles telephone calls and requests for services both professionally and appropriately.
- Completes procedures in timely fashion. Completes work by the end of the shift or communicates with coworkers about work that needs completion. Adapts to changes in the neuromuscular division’s needs including but not limited to: offering assistance to other team members, adjusting assignments, etc. Accommodates patient’s needs through flexibility in staff scheduling and ensuring timeliness of studies.
- Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the department and hospital’s mission. Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
Requirements

- 2+ Years experience as an EMG Technician

Compensation Range: $24.04- $33.65
