About the role
The Emerging Systems business unit at Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of 5,408 optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide.
Responsibilities
- Develop and document electronics architectures for optical communication payloads, including power, timing, control interfaces, and system-level integration.
- Translate system requirements into electrical requirements, interface definitions, and design constraints.
- Lead architecture reviews and provide technical guidance to design, FPGA, and firmware teams.
- Perform trade studies for component selection, power distribution approaches, timing strategies, and communication interfaces.
- Support integration, test planning, and troubleshooting during hardware bring-up and system validation.
- Collaborate with systems engineering to ensure requirements flowdown, verification planning, and traceability.
- Contribute to risk assessments, design margins, and reliability considerations appropriate for space environments.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or related field.
- 7+ years of experience in electronics design, system integration, or electronics architecture.
- Experience defining or integrating multi-board electronics systems with mixed-signal, digital, and power elements.
- Strong understanding of power distribution, timing/synchronization, interfaces (SPI, I2C, LVDS, SERDES, etc.), and system-level signal integrity.
- Ability to produce clear architecture documentation, interface control documents, and requirements.
- Ability to lead technical discussions and drive decisions across multiple engineering disciplines.
- Hands-on experience with hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with electronics for aerospace, defense, or other mission-critical environments.
- Familiarity with FPGA-based systems, embedded processors, or high-speed digital design.
- Exposure to radiation effects, derating, or reliability engineering for harsh environments.
- Experience with EMI/EMC considerations, grounding strategies, or thermal constraints.
- Exposure to optical communication systems, photonics, or precision timing architectures.
- Experience with requirements management tools or model-based systems engineering.
