About the role

We are seeking a Senior Level Electrical Engineer in the El Paso area to provide on-site oversight of large-scale data center construction projects. Responsibilities include coordination with trade partners, RFI resolution, submittal and shop drawing review, and collaboration with the in-office design team. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, comfortable working autonomously in high-pressure construction environments, with strong communication skills, including conflict resolution and collaborative problem-solving.

This engagement is for an initial 6-month on-site term, with potential extension up to 2 years. Opportunities for transfer within SMC to other jobsite or office locations, as well as different roles, are available after the initial term for qualifying candidates.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the successful execution of SMC’s design work on-site, coordinating closely with contractors, clients, and design partners from all disciplines.
• Communicate effectively with co-workers and clients to meet scheduled project deadlines, including high-priority RFI and submittal reviews.
• Be present at the client job site daily (except for PTO or holidays) in accordance with SMC policies.
• Conduct daily job walks of in-progress construction, identify deviations from contract documents early for speedy remediation, and address contractor conflicts and questions.
• Complete partial and building punch walks in alignment with the contractor’s construction schedule.
• Demonstrate expertise in mission-critical infrastructure, including campus-level medium voltage distribution, highly redundant power systems (e.g., distributed and block redundant topologies), on-site generation, UPS backup, and building systems such as small power, lighting, grounding, and fire alarm.
• Be intimately familiar with the commissioning process, including typical 5-level commissioning, review of scripts and reports, and NETA testing practices.
• Participate in level 4 and 5 commissioning as a representative of SMC and our client.
• Coordinate with internal and external disciplines for RFI resolution, submittal, and shop drawing review.
• Spot-check contractor redline drawings, breaker, and equipment settings for accuracy and completeness.
• Assist in coordinating monitoring system interfaces for electrical equipment with controls and telecommunications engineers.
• Define key performance criteria for power monitoring systems (EPMS), including specifications, points lists, and network hierarchies.
• Understand and apply local and national construction codes and project specifications.
• Use Microsoft tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
• Meet project deadlines, including working necessary hours to complete major deliverables.
• Communicate clearly in both written and spoken forms.
• Direct office work to support high-priority on-site needs.
• Mentor and train other engineers, designers, and modelers to develop electrical field knowledge, including lessons learned.
• Maintain excellent organizational skills, managing multiple tasks simultaneously.

Requirements

• 4-year degree in electrical engineering or architectural engineering with an electrical focus preferred. 2-year degrees and EET degrees with relevant work experience will be considered. Significant experience as an electrical superintendent, owner’s representative, or commissioning agent may substitute for education.
• Minimum 8 years of experience in facility electrical design, construction, and/or commissioning.
• Experience in electrical design and construction administration for large industrial and commercial buildings is preferred, with mission-critical design experience as a strong plus.
• Experience performing and reviewing power studies such as Neher-McGrath, short circuit, coordination, and arc flash is strongly preferred.
• Experience across the entire construction process, from schematic design through construction administration, including submittal and shop drawing review, and field work such as existing condition surveys, site observations, and punch lists.
• Experience leading small electrical teams and interfacing with clients is preferred.
• Experience coordinating with contractors, clients, and design partners is required.
• Experience using construction management tools such as Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud is strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of controls and monitoring systems for mechanical and electrical systems is a plus.
• Experience using Autodesk Revit for drawing development is a plus.
• Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred; unlicensed candidates with appropriate on-the-job experience are welcome to apply.

Pay

Base compensation: $150,000–$300,000 (actual compensation varies based on education, experience, and skills).
