Senior Drafting Technician (Structures) NY HELPS
About the Role
In the Office of Structures, under the supervision of a Professional Engineer 1, incumbents perform a variety of technical tasks related to structural engineering projects.
Responsibilities
- Prepare drawings of moderate to complex difficulty for structural engineering projects using MicroStation CADD software.
- Prepare and check engineering computations of moderate difficulty.
- Prepare and check quantity estimates.
- Perform field investigations to collect or confirm data.
- Develop and utilize complete physical engineering models for design, clash detection, visualization, construction coordination, contract plan preparation, and estimating.
- Handle special assignments to address management needs.
- Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Requirements
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). Candidates must meet the following qualifications:
Promotional
- One year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Engineering Technician, Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Senior Engineering Technician, or Senior Engineering Technician (Soils).
Open Competitive
- Two years of drafting experience including at least one year of specialized drafting experience in structural engineering.
- OR an associate degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, architecture, or architectural technology, or a certificate in computer-aided drafting issued by a regionally accredited college or university, and one year of specialized experience on civil engineering projects.
Certificates from a Trade or Technical school will be accepted only if the institution is regionally accredited or recognized by the NYS Department of Education. The drafting program must be accepted, not just the school.
Candidates may also qualify for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
Additional Information
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
- For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, meaning no examination is required but candidates must meet the minimum qualifications.
- At a future date, employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive status converted to competitive status without needing to compete in an examination, affording them the same rights and privileges as other competitive class employees.
- While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
- Educational credentials must be awarded by an institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education/Secretary of Education. If awarded outside the U.S., independent verification of equivalency is required.
Pay
The salary range listed reflects the full range for this graded position. For new State employees appointed into graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range). Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations, and negotiated union contracts.
