Senior Drafting Technician (Structures) NY HELPS

About the Role

In the Office of Structures, under the supervision of a Professional Engineer 1, incumbents perform a variety of technical tasks related to structural engineering projects.

Responsibilities

• Prepare drawings of moderate to complex difficulty for structural engineering projects using MicroStation CADD software.
• Prepare and check engineering computations of moderate difficulty.
• Prepare and check quantity estimates.
• Perform field investigations to collect or confirm data.
• Develop and utilize complete physical engineering models for design, clash detection, visualization, construction coordination, contract plan preparation, and estimating.
• Handle special assignments to address management needs.
• Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Requirements

• One year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Engineering Technician, Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Senior Engineering Technician, or Senior Engineering Technician (Soils) for promotional candidates.
• For open competitive candidates, either:
  • Two years of drafting experience including at least one year of specialized drafting experience in structural engineering.
  • An associate degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, architecture, or architectural technology, or a certificate in computer-aided drafting from a regionally accredited college or university, plus one year of specialized experience on civil engineering projects.
• Certificates from a trade or technical school will be accepted only if the institution is regionally accredited or recognized by the NYS Department of Education.
• Candidates may also qualify through reachable Civil Service eligible lists or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

Additional Information

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. This position may initially be filled via a non-competitive appointment under the NY HELPS Program, with potential conversion to competitive status in the future. Required educational credentials must be awarded by an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Independent verification of equivalency is required for degrees awarded outside the U.S. and its territories.

Pay

The salary range reflects the full range for this graded position. For new State employees, the annual salary starts at the hiring rate of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with relevant regulations and union contracts.
