Senior Distribution Engineer (Denver)
About the role
The Senior Distribution Engineer will lead project teams to create world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments on various 2.4kV to 34.5kV overhead and underground utility distribution projects. They will adapt electrical distribution plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs, and lead the design of distribution voltage packages for both overhead and underground projects.
Responsibilities
- Lead the project team throughout the design and construction process.
- Review various distribution calculations, including cable pulling, voltage drop, and pole loading calculations.
- Apply strong knowledge of NESC standards and utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.
- Participate in the development of project schedules, scope, budget, resource forecasting, and construction planning.
- Manage change orders effectively.
- Find non-standard design solutions for complex projects.
- Oversee or perform Quality Control reviews of project deliverables.
- Oversee or perform construction administration activities.
- Lead field inspections for overhead and underground electric facilities on public and private utility systems.
- Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
- Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers, and contractors, and develop new business opportunities.
- Ensure customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met.
- Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.
- Develop cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.
- Mentor less experienced engineers and designers.
- Ensure adherence to QA/QC processes.
- Communicate effectively regarding vegetation management, third-party attachments, right-of-way, and outage planning.
- Comply with company and site safety policies.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program, and 7 years of distribution engineering experience required. EPC project experience preferred.
- Or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related Engineering Technology degree from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 7 years of distribution engineering experience required. EPC project experience preferred.
- Or Master's Degree in Engineering and 6 years of distribution engineering experience required. EPC project experience preferred.
- Expert knowledge of electrical distribution power flow.
- Strong knowledge of overhead and underground construction methods and distribution system equipment.
- Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Experience in distribution design software and GIS to aid in design.
- Expert knowledge regarding easements, right-of-way, and permitting for distribution projects.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with leading the design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members.
- Ability to lead the execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
- Ability to travel.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
