About the role

The Senior Director of Construction at Stanford Health Care (SHC) leads construction management services for capital projects across SHC facilities, serving SHC on behalf of multiple Stanford Medicine entities. This role provides significant leadership to optimize staff resources and ensure consistent project delivery, reporting to and supporting the Vice President to shape the department's capital initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Define Facilities Construction strategy and policies in alignment with capital plan and SHC priorities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships across Stanford Medicine, Stanford University, and external agencies such as local municipalities and the Department of Health Access and Information (HCAI)/Office of Statewide Planning and Development (OSHPD).
  • Oversee and manage construction budgets and departmental operating costs within financial guidelines and parameters.
  • Actively participate in disaster preparedness (i.e. Earthquake preparedness) and recovery program as applied to construction operations and facilities coordination.
  • Oversee annual planning process for Facilities Construction department.
  • Develop, review, revise, and approve contracts and invoices for engineers, contractors, vendors for assigned capital project contracts in partnership with the Facilities Services business office.
  • Advise on contracts and invoices for architects for assigned capital project contracts.
  • Develop senior leadership bench; oversee staffing plans, performance management, and succession across multiple departments.
  • Lead construction portfolio executive communications and provide visibility to executive (VP/C-suite) and medical leadership.
  • Sponsor construction industry innovations & technology adoption (artificial intelligence, mobile QA/QC apps, Building Information Modeling (BIM) for field use, etc) and lean improvement methods across Facilities Construction.
  • Review and lead in execution of policies that directly relate to construction management services for SHC facilities to support the execution of capital construction projects, and coordinate with planning, operations and academic priorities.
  • Assure construction compliance with applicable laws, building codes, energy and sustainability guidelines, and standards of good practice governing the safety of hospital and outpatient facilities.
  • Position may require on-call availability during non-standard hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to meet business needs and respond to emergencies as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university.
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.
  • Demonstrated performance ability to budget and have executive level financial acumen.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with widely diverse groups, including individuals at all levels both within and outside the organization and gain their cooperation.
  • Ability to communicate at an Executive level and command an executive presence.
  • Leadership skills required to handle potentially sensitive situations by applying communication and consultative skills in working with internal and external constituent groups to gain understanding and reach acceptance of optimal decisions.
  • Ability to guide and coach people managers toward successful completion of highly complex construction projects within schedule and budget objectives.
  • Management proficiency to plan, organize, motivate, mentor, direct and evaluate the work of others.
  • Demonstrated performance relating to the principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal and personnel management.
  • Ability to prioritize work by making informed judgments and to develop solutions for complex problems.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory requirements related to areas of functional responsibility.
  • Enterprise-level knowledge of healthcare construction, HCAI/OSHPD compliance, and policies of local jurisdictions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of enterprise strategy, governance structures, and system-level operations to ensure alignment across functions.
  • Expert knowledge of long-range financial planning, capital strategy, and enterprise risk management to support multi-year portfolios.
  • Ability to anticipate market trends, regulatory shifts, and enterprise risks, and translate insights into proactive strategies.
  • Physical Demands and Work Conditions: Blood Borne Pathogens Category II - Tasks that involve NO exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues, but employment may require performing unplanned Category I tasks.
