Senior Data Center Consultant

We also conduct data center assessments for investors acquiring or developing facilities.
About the role
The Senior Data Center Consultant will provide leadership in analyzing data center infrastructure as part of strategy development projects. The role requires expertise across four key areas: Electrical, Mechanical, Operations, and Master Planning. You will collaborate with a team to conduct due diligence and strategy analysis for clients, delivering actionable insights and recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Electrical:
- Interpret electrical one-line diagrams and evaluate mission-critical electrical distribution systems, including utility service, switchgear, UPS, generators, transfer switches, PDUs, transformers, and grounding systems.
- Apply knowledge of electrical redundancy concepts (N, N+1, 2N, etc.), reliability principles, load calculations, power capacity, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Assess the condition, operation, and maintenance of critical power infrastructure, such as UPS systems, battery systems, standby power, and electrical distribution equipment.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret operational data to evaluate system performance, reliability, energy efficiency, and compliance with industry best practices.
- Apply the National Electrical Code (NEC) and mission-critical facility design standards while working safely in energized or critical environments.
- Serve as a subject matter expert, preparing technical reports and presentations using Microsoft Office applications.
- Mechanical:
- Interpret mechanical one-line drawings and evaluate HVAC infrastructure in mission-critical facilities, from central cooling plants to CRAC/CRAH systems.
- Understand redundancy concepts and calculate system load capacity for mechanical systems.
- Assess the condition, operation, and maintenance of mechanical infrastructure, including chillers, cooling towers, heat rejection systems, pumps, valves, piping, thermal storage, and controls.
- Analyze mechanical system designs to identify single points of failure, reliability risks, and energy optimization opportunities, providing practical recommendations.
- Collect and interpret operational data from mechanical equipment and perform engineering calculations related to cooling capacity, power, kVA, power factor, and energy performance.
- Apply industry best practices for mission-critical mechanical systems, including redundancy classifications, reliability principles (MTBF, MTTR, availability, maintainability), and safe work practices.
- Act as a customer-facing mechanical subject matter expert, communicating technical findings and recommendations clearly.
- Operations:
- Develop maintenance staffing plans and define technical skill requirements for mission-critical facility operations.
- Operate and evaluate Building Monitoring and Control Systems (BMS/BAS) supporting critical mechanical and electrical infrastructure.
- Assess the condition, maintenance practices, and documentation of mission-critical infrastructure, including raised floor environments, fire detection/suppression systems, and equipment records.
- Evaluate operational processes such as maintenance management, change management, and security systems for reliability, compliance, and best practices.
- Identify single points of failure, assess infrastructure reliability risks, and develop cost-effective mitigation recommendations.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of mission-critical systems, including Emergency Power Off (EPO), VESDA, FM-200, Ansul, sprinkler/pre-action systems, and physical security technologies (card access, video surveillance, biometric access, perimeter protection).
- Conceptual Master Planning:
- Evaluate overall facility requirements and contribute to planning sessions and workshops.
- Collaborate with engineering/design teams to develop conceptual designs for infrastructure expansion or capacity changes.
- Understand redundancy requirements and Tier levels for data center design.
- Evaluate critical loading requirements for "greenfield" data center options.
- Provide Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) estimates (±30%) for recommendations.
- Present findings and interact with customers at all levels.
- Project Leadership:
- Act as the client partner and project executive, managing project delivery, quality, and client relationships over time.
- Participate in project delivery, utilizing the group’s analytic tools as required.
- Manage projects to meet forecasted financial targets.
- Communication & Industry Engagement:
- Communicate professionally and persuasively with senior client stakeholders (CIO/CFO/COO) in verbal and written form.
- Participate as an industry expert in symposiums, professional journals, and webinars.
Requirements
- Demonstrated expertise in electrical and/or mechanical systems for mission-critical data centers.
- Strong understanding of redundancy concepts, reliability principles, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Ability to assess infrastructure condition, operation, and maintenance effectiveness.
- Experience collecting, analyzing, and interpreting operational data to evaluate system performance and compliance.
- Working knowledge of industry standards (e.g., NEC, mission-critical facility design) and safe work practices in energized environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and strong communication/presentation skills.
- Ability to develop maintenance staffing plans and evaluate operational processes (e.g., BMS/BAS, change management, security).
- Experience in conceptual master planning, including redundancy requirements, Tier levels, and ROM estimates.
- Project leadership experience, including client management, financial oversight, and quality delivery.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of data center operational experience in privately owned or colocation facilities.
- BA/BS from an accredited college/university (Engineering or Computer Science degree preferred).
- Applicable data center professional certifications (desirable).
- Ability to pass a background check prior to offer.
- U.S. passport and ability to travel internationally (25%-50% travel, with potential for sustained travel during global projects).
- Work primarily remote from a home office.
Pay
The anticipated base salary range for this position is $125,000 to $155,000 per year. Actual compensation will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and internal equity. In addition to base salary, this position may be eligible for bonus, overtime, or other forms of compensation, along with a comprehensive benefits package supporting well-being, professional development, and work-life balance.
