About the Role

Work in all phases of routine and emergency cleaning and general maintenance of all UC Riverside Dining and Hospitality Services, including Dining and Child Development facilities. Scope of work includes, but is not limited to:

  • Cleaning windows, mirrors, floors, walls, ceilings, furniture, carpets, appliances, drinking fountains, and all related fixtures.
  • Cleaning kitchen areas, dining rooms, offices, resident rooms, classrooms, bathrooms, and showers.
  • Cleaning lounges and apartments, including stoves, ovens, and refrigerators.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing food production areas, kitchen equipment, counters, exhaust filters, and hoods.
  • Preparing rooms for summer conference groups and special events by cleaning rooms, moving furniture, making up beds with linens, and exchanging towels.
  • Performing "set-up" duties and restoring areas per contracts for catered events, conference groups, and special events.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing the Child Development Center to state-mandated standards.
  • Maintaining building appearance and cleanliness through sweeping, dusting, mopping, vacuuming, buffing, stripping, waxing, polishing, and graffiti removal.
  • Moving furniture, fixtures, and equipment for proper cleaning.
  • Cleaning up biohazards such as blood, vomit, rodent droppings, dead animals, and raw sewage.
  • Moving and emptying trash containers, recycling containers, and dumpsters.
  • Cleaning up construction debris from new construction and major refurbishment or remodeling projects.
  • Maintaining exteriors by sweeping, blowing down sidewalks and stairs, or cleaning with high-pressure washers and riding sidewalk scrubbers.
  • Assisting with pool maintenance, including cleaning and adding water or chemicals as needed.

Requirements

  • Six months of experience in a custodial cleaning operation or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Proven experience safely using cleaners, solvents, and chemicals common to custodial work.
  • Ability to clean areas on ceilings, walls, and floors requiring constant turning, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, and crouching.
  • Demonstrated experience performing custodial work in dining and kitchen facilities in compliance with health codes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and experience in preventing food contamination in kitchen and dining facilities.
  • Knowledge of the safe and proper clean-up of biohazards such as rodent droppings, vomit, blood, and raw sewage.
  • Working knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Basic knowledge of safe procedures when asbestos, lead paint, or mold is suspected, including applicable federal and state regulations (e.g., SB 198).
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including safely lifting and moving materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely work on ladders up to eighteen feet high.
  • Experience in the safe use of custodial equipment and machinery, including floor stripping/buffing machines, vacuums, high-pressure washers, carpet cleaning machines, squeegees, and brushes.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather, dusty, wet, vaporous, and smelly environments, including exposure to cleaning solvents, paints, sawdust, construction debris, raw sewage, vomit, rain, high heat, and humidity.
  • Ability to work in areas with constant noise from machinery such as vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaning machines, and fans.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written or verbal instructions in English and respond both verbally and in writing.
  • Prior experience prioritizing work orders, routine tasks, and emergency requests, and choosing proper materials and equipment to accomplish work safely and efficiently.
  • Basic computer skills, including checking emails and using Outlook calendar.
  • Valid driver’s license and a driving record in accordance with local policies or enrollment in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
  • Current work authorization to accept a UC Riverside staff position (sponsorship for employment visas is not available for this role).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of how to read and understand chemical safety data sheets.
  • Knowledge of multi-purpose room set-ups, including classroom, theater, and banquet-style seating.
  • Knowledge of chemicals used in cleaning restaurants and their proper usage and storage.
  • Ability to train and direct student assistants in custodial duties.

Pay

The full salary range for the Senior Custodian is $26.69 - $36.62 per hour. Salary offers are based on a variety of considerations, including education, licensure, certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.
