Senior Counsel - Employment & Litigation

Responsibilities

• Advises HR and relevant business stakeholders on day-to-day employment matters, including wage and overtime standards, privacy rights, employee benefits, employee agreements and policies, employee performance management, discipline, termination, and investigations pertaining to allegations of harassment and discrimination.
• Affords legal advice to HR and relevant business stakeholders on employment-related laws, including the Fair Labor Standards Act, Family Medical Leave Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, National Labor Relations Act, Occupation Health and Safety Act, state worker’s compensation laws, and related laws, as well as relevant employment-related laws in other jurisdictions.
• Manages the global docket of potential and active employment-related litigation and administrative agency matters.
• Maintains awareness of developments in employment laws and regulations, assesses risk, and recommends strategies to support proactive compliance.
• Coordinates management of external counsel, as necessary, in a cost-effective manner and in accordance with CLO Billing guidelines.
• Coordinates third-party vendors retained by UL Solutions on any litigation or dispute matters.
• Performs other legal duties as directed by the ACG or other CLO leadership.

Qualifications

• JD degree and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience in a law firm or corporate legal department
• Bar admission in good standing; preference for Illinois
• In-depth knowledge of employment and labor laws and regulations
• Strong analytical and organizational skills and excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to use sound judgment, provide guidance, and make key decisions in a demanding and fast-paced environment
• Ability to contribute as a team player and work collaboratively with colleagues, clients, and business leaders to fulfill and advance company strategy
• Ability to multi-task and organize workflow independently in response to the company's strategic priorities and objectives
• Willingness to travel on limited basis

About the Role

As a member of the Legal team, the Senior Counsel – Employment and Litigation (CC) is a core member of UL Solutions’ legal function. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, Litigation and Disputes (ACG), the CC will work closely with Human Resources (HR) and with other business leaders to coordinate and assist on the following matters within the Chief Legal Office (CLO).
