Senior Content Writer, Engineering

About the role

Hercules is looking for a senior or staff level Content Writer to work with engineers to write technical content for the engineering blog. The role emphasizes Hercules’ operating principles: shipping fast, striving for excellence, having good taste, being proud of work, being hungry to break through walls, and operating at any level to get things done. The founding team works in‑office in San Francisco (Kearny and Bush) with a strong preference for in‑office work; remote is considered for exceptional candidates who can work US time zones and travel to the office regularly.

Responsibilities

• Deep dive into engineering and research to write about the hardest technical challenges, systems built, decisions/tradeoffs, outcomes, and lessons learned.
• Find new stories by spending time with engineers, reading internal documents, and exploring the product and codebase.
• Publish frequently—turn drafts into shipped articles as part of Hercules’ shipping culture.
• Help engineers publish by co‑writing and editing posts, turning rough notes, conversations, and technical drafts into excellent articles supported by diagrams, code examples, and data.

Requirements

• A portfolio of excellent writing for an engineering audience (explicitly required for application).

Skills

• Exceptional technical writing: explain complex ideas clearly, tersely, simply, precisely, and usefully.
• Technical depth: ability to read code, understand system architecture, follow discussions about infrastructure, databases, APIs, and AI systems; test code examples and explain tradeoffs.
• Strong interviewing skills: ask questions that uncover difficulties, alternatives, breakdowns, and solutions; keep digging until understanding.
• Strong research and analytical rigor: read technical papers, interpret benchmarks and experimental results, check evidence behind claims; explain methodology, tradeoffs, and limitations accurately.
• Editorial judgment: recognize what engineers will find surprising or useful; turn complicated projects into focused stories using diagrams, charts, and code examples.
• AI‑native: leverage AI to 10× output speed and improve quality.

Pay

$100k‑$250k + equity (variable based on seniority, equity, and location)
