Responsibilities

• Oversee construction inspection activities to ensure compliance with project plans, approved shop/working drawings, project documents, and specifications; report observations orally and in writing to direct report.
• Prepare and submit accurate, legible, comprehensive, and complete testing and/or inspection reports on a daily basis in accordance with established quality procedures.
• Review plans, specifications, general notes, and shop/working drawings for assigned activities prior to performing assigned duties.
• Perform, supervise, and report on frequency compliance and coordinate field tests on materials and completed work using standard methods established by AASHTO, ASTM, or other agency with appropriate, properly calibrated testing equipment.
• Train and serve as a lead worker for less experienced workers; assign work priority tasks.
• Assist direct report in planning and coordinating inspection operations.
• Meet with contractor’s supervisors or other project leaders on project sites to discuss and coordinate testing, sampling, or inspection of construction materials or construction procedures.
• Review materials tests and completed work performed by inspectors to ensure compliance with requirements of established procedures.
• Verify adequacy of samples and locations at which samples are collected to ensure representative distribution of sampling and testing.
• Ensure the safe utilization, storage, and maintenance of all documents and tools, including company vehicle.
• Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external personnel.
• Work closely with direct report to establish priorities and deadlines, as well as provide updates on progress or delays of tasks or assignments.
• Understand, adhere to, and participate in the Raba Kistner Health & Safety and BBS Programs, setting a good example of our safety standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 15 years’ experience in roadway and related facilities construction inspection (Senior Construction Inspector I) or 20 years’ experience (Senior Construction Inspector II), or NICET Level IV certification in Transportation Engineering Technology (Highway Construction). Related experience and/or education may substitute for on-the-job experience.
• Valid driver’s license within the applicable jurisdiction and meet firm’s auto insurability requirements.
• Able to travel to project sites and maneuver over rough and uneven terrain.
• Good oral and written communication skills; ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations using basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometric functions of right triangles.
• Thorough knowledge of highway construction plans, construction inspection procedures, specifications, materials used in highway construction, and materials testing procedures.
• Considerable knowledge of the State-specific Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices or National Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices approved by the Federal Highway Administrator as the National Standard.
• Ability to use hand tools such as sledgehammers, shovels, and picks.

Preferred certifications/trainings (or ability to complete within 6 months of employment):

• Completion of Troxler Manufacturing or equivalent radiation safety course to use nuclear gauges.
• State-specific Technician Training and Certification Program (TTCP) for applicable testing/sampling procedures.
• ACI Field Testing Technician Level 1 certification.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, stop, and talk.
• Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.
• Frequently required to use hands and reach.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, focus vision, and depth vision.
• Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
• Potential exposure to movement of heavy equipment on construction or roadway sites; hazardous chemicals and solvents, noise, dust, fumes, grease and oils, radiant and electrical energy, and vibration.
• Must follow proper safety procedures and utilize appropriate protective equipment.
• May require protracted or irregular hours; flexibility to work irregular hours is necessary due to client needs.
• Work may require out-of-town/overnight travel to Raba Kistner offices, client offices, and project locations.
