About the role
Primarily field-based role requiring comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions. Full-time position with standard business hours; occasional night work or overtime may be required based on project deadlines. Must be able to work onsite at a WSB office as needed, and travel daily within assigned territory. Reliable transportation required.
Responsibilities
- Monitor on-site construction activities for compliance with plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Inspect materials and construction processes in accordance with client scope of services, including plans, specifications, and special provisions.
- Transport samples to appropriate laboratories for testing as required.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of daily operations, significant events, and inspection findings.
- Prepare daily inspection reports, pay estimates, quantity calculations, and backup documentation.
- Monitor and inspect work zone traffic control and contractor’s quality control procedures.
- Perform material sampling, testing, and verification of procedures in conformance with approved Quality Control Plans.
- Review material testing procedures and results for contract compliance; measure quantities of materials placed.
- Conduct sampling and/or in-place testing of soil, aggregate base, concrete, and asphalt concrete pavement.
- Mentor and train early-career professionals; assist resident engineers and project administrators.
- Participate in project meetings and reviews, providing technical expertise and insights.
- Support the development of new techniques and standards for inspection and contract administration.
- Operate tools requiring fine motor skills and move materials weighing up to 75 pounds periodically.
- Traverse construction sites with uneven terrain, slopes, confined spaces, or reinforced trenches.
- Conduct visual assessments of task quality and job site safety.
- Ascend/descend into job site areas to complete inspections and data collection; may remain in stationary position for extended periods.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 10 years of DOT or municipal CEI inspection services experience required.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Level 1 and Level 2 certifications (including MOT Advanced).
- Aggregate Production Certification, Bituminous Street Certification, Bridge Construction, ACI Certification, Concrete Field Inspection, Grading and Base Tester, Grading and Base Inspector.
- IMSA Traffic Signal Inspector Level I, Nuclear Radiation Safety, and other relevant certifications as required by project location.
- Stormwater, Erosion, and Sedimentation Control Training and Certification Program for Inspectors and Contractors (as applicable).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite Products (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive).
- Experience with project documentation software preferred.
