Confidential search for a Senior Head Accountant to lead the accounting department of a well-established commercial real estate investment and property management company. This is a working leadership role that reports directly to company ownership and involves both supervising a small team and performing hands-on accounting tasks.

About the role

The Head Accountant oversees the financial operations of multiple commercial real estate entities and properties, ensuring accurate financial reporting, GAAP compliance, and strong internal controls. The role includes mentoring a small accounting team, managing month-end and year-end closings, preparing financial statements, and improving accounting processes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a small accounting team.
  • Oversee all accounting operations for commercial real estate entities and properties.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Manage month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Oversee the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and bank reconciliations.
  • Prepare budgets, financial reports, and cash flow projections.
  • Review CAM reconciliations, lease accounting, tenant billings, and property operating statements.
  • Coordinate with outside CPAs, lenders, auditors, and ownership.
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency through technology and process improvements.
  • Assist ownership with financial planning, reporting, and strategic decision-making.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years in an accounting leadership role.
  • Significant commercial real estate accounting experience is required.
  • Thorough understanding of GAAP and commercial real estate financial reporting.
  • Extensive experience with commercial real estate accounting software platforms; Yardi Voyager commercial module experience is required.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is a plus.
  • CPA designation is a plus.
