Senior Clinical Laboratory Technician - Pathology & Immunology

Location: St. Louis, MO 63108. Scheduled hours: 40 per week.

About the role

This position performs routine and/or special assays on blood and other body fluids, including bone marrow aspirates and cores, amniotic fluid, chorionic villi samples, and other tissues within the Washington University Clinical Cytogenomics lab, Department of Pathology. Laboratory testing includes chromosome analysis, chromosomal microarray, and Fluorescent In-Situ Hybridization (FISH). The role offers opportunities for advancement to Technologist I and further.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine assays according to laboratory standard operating procedures, including specimen processing, instrument maintenance, cleaning, minor troubleshooting, lab supply inventory, and storage; may perform special assays with supervision by a senior medical technologist or supervisor.
• Perform cell culture and use aseptic technique.
• Prepare reagents used in laboratory procedures.
• Assess quality of samples for processing and cell culture.
• Recognize problem situations, participate in problem-solving, inform supervisor and lab leadership of unusual situations, and request technical assistance.
• May assist with validation of new assays; compile data for supervisory review; utilize database, spreadsheet, and word processing programs.
• Comply with all regulatory and client requirements for testing and documentation.
• Demonstrate a general understanding of assay methods and clinical relevance; participate in relevant continuing education.
• Assist supervisor with other duties and special projects as needed.
• Hands-on training includes recognition and classification of G-banded chromosomes using microscopes and computer-captured images, as well as training in specialized computer software designed specifically for chromosome analysis.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in a clinical laboratory.
• Requires some physical effort and the use of personal protective equipment.
• Requires operation of lab equipment and computers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and/or experience may substitute for minimum education.
• No specific certification or professional license is required, though Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification from ASCP Board of Certification is preferred.
• No specific work experience is required.

Pay

Salary range: $21.33 - $31.98 per hour. The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in this job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including qualifications, performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade, and department budget.
