About the Role

Reporting to the Veterinary & Community Programs Director, the Senior Clinic Manager oversees a clinic team serving over 12,000 animals annually through shelter and community services. This role is a key organizational leader, responsible for thought leadership, collaboration with Veterinary team leadership, and ensuring the entire Vet Services team executes protocols, procedures, patient care, and support for pet owners. The Senior Clinic Manager should be equally skilled in technical abilities and managing a large, dynamic team, with a passion for animal welfare, High-Quality High-Volume Spay Neuter (HQHVSN) practices, and increasing access to veterinary care in the community.

Responsibilities

Leadership

• Drives innovation and sustainable growth by identifying best practices and collaborating with the broader Seattle Humane team to implement mission-driven change.
• Ensures compliance with patient care and shelter protocols among staff.
• Communicates professionally and effectively with the public, Seattle Humane staff, and volunteers.
• Maintains collaborative relationships with local veterinary technician and assistant training programs to promote hiring and oversee externship opportunities.
• Exemplifies teamwork within the Veterinary Services team and across Seattle Humane departments.
• Oversees the success of clinic staff, including Licensed Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, Clinic Associates, and Clinic Coordinators.
• Conducts regular check-ins with staff and promptly elevates concerns to the Director.
• Handles disciplinary meetings and maintains related documentation.
• Supports staff in specialization opportunities and skill development.
• Manages volunteers by:
  • Monitoring volunteers to ensure adherence to organization and department policies, high standards of customer service, and animal care.
  • Providing feedback, documentation, and discipline of volunteers in coordination with Volunteer Services.
  • Maintaining communication with the Volunteer Services team regarding volunteer positions and recruiting needs.

Clinic Oversight

• Manages daily clinic flow to meet established priorities.
• Performs all roles of support staff as needed.
• Ensures the clinic and all equipment are well-maintained.
• Capable of performing or learning all staff skills, including:
  • Caring for critical patients.
  • Independently providing medical care as assigned by a DVM.
  • Working with patients with infectious diseases.
  • Leading a surgery team handling 20-50 patients per day.
  • Responding to emergencies.
• Manages all purchase orders (POs) for department spending, inventory, and ordering of supplies to ensure adequate stock.
• Performs year-end full-stock inventories, regular stock checks, and inventory controls.
• Maintains accurate files and records, especially for medical, surgical, and euthanasia records, adhering to organizational retention policies.
• Ensures compliance with safety, health, and labor regulations.

Access to Care

• Supports the overall function of Seattle Humane’s Community Clinic.
• Provides compassionate, professional, and judgment-free support to clients seeking services, using a trauma-informed approach.
• Supports Seattle Humane’s efforts to increase access to care in underserved areas through outreach clinics and collaboration with external agencies.

Secondary Functions

• Works closely with all departments to communicate the medical needs of shelter animals.
• Collaborates with other Operations departments to provide training related to veterinary care.
• Promotes a positive, supportive, and cooperative work environment based on mutual respect and open communication.

• Performs all other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

Directly supervises Clinic Supervisors. Oversees a clinic team consisting of Clinic Coordinators, Veterinary Assistants, Licensed Veterinary Technicians, Clinic Associates, and volunteers.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of experience in the veterinary field. Experience in HQHVSN, emergency medicine, and/or animal welfare is a bonus.
• At least 2 years of management or supervisory experience.
• Familiarity with animal behavior and low-stress animal handling in a clinic/shelter environment.
• Strong organizational and planning skills to determine work priorities and schedules.
• Ability to analyze problems, negotiate solutions, and understand statistical information.
• Proficient in computer technology, including Microsoft Office programs, email, internet, and database management software.

Licenses/Certifications

• Licensed Veterinary Technician in Washington state or ability to transfer license from another state (preferred).
• Certified for euthanasia under Washington State regulations or willing to become trained.
• Capable of being certified in CPR and human first aid.
• Ability to obtain a Veterinary Medication Clerk License (can be obtained on the job).

Working Conditions

Primarily indoor work in an office/clinic setting for nine to twelve hours per day. Some work may be done in kennels or outdoors. Exposures to potential hazards include:

• Waste anesthetic gases, radiation, cleaning chemicals, and disinfectants.
• Formalin, needles, scalpel blades, and other sharp hazards.
• Animal bites, scratches, zoonotic diseases, animal hair, dander, and wastes.
• Pharmaceutical and biological agents, euthanasia solution.
• Eye hazards, steam (from autoclave), wet floors, potential electrical hazards.
• Constant noise (vacuum, fan, barking) and interruptions.
• Back strain, exposure to cold or other hazards with walk-in freezer.

Requires frequent standing, walking, crouching, bending, kneeling, and occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds. Must be able to speak clearly, hear well, write legibly, see clearly, and distinguish odors by sense of smell. Good dexterity and sense of touch with both hands are needed.

Schedule

Full-time, exempt, salaried position. Scheduled for 40 hours per week, generally over four ten-hour shifts. Requires working at least one regular weekend day. The clinic operates 7 days per week, including holidays; schedule may vary based on coverage needs, holidays, or emergencies.

Location

This position works on-site at the Bellevue, WA campus.
