Senior Civil Engineer - Aviation & Federal (Oak Ridge)

As a Senior Civil Engineer in Oak Ridge, TN, you will lead civil design project teams to create world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments primarily supporting local DOE complexes (e.g., ORNL and Y-12). Other projects may include municipal, power, process, corporate, healthcare, pipeline, airports, institutional, industrial, manufacturing, and military facilities.

You will have direct contact with local clients, supporting discipline-specific work under Basic Ordering Agreements (BOAs) and large Federal budget line-item projects. Responsibilities

• Lead civil design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion, addressing project needs and requirements set forth by project managers.
• Prepare civil equipment, packaged equipment, construction specifications, data sheets, Requests for Qualifications (RFQs), technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
• Review civil vendor drawings and interface with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, detailers, and designers.
• Participate in the development of project schedules, scope, budget, staffing planning, and construction planning.
• Responsible for effective management of change orders.
• Apply expert knowledge of civil engineering concepts, practices, codes, and procedures; compile studies and reports; write specifications.
• Develop non-standard design solutions for complex projects.
• Conduct quality reviews of production drawings and project-related data to verify compliance with project, client, and industry standards, including constructability.
• Oversee construction administration, including coordination with field personnel to resolve design-related installation issues, calculations, field inspections, and material testing.
• Lead field inspections, installations, measurements, or calculations for public and private clients.
• Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with clients, customers, and contractors; develop new business opportunities and ensure customer satisfaction.
• Participate in sales and marketing efforts; identify, lead, and manage key pursuits.
• Lead the development of cost proposals and qualification statements to achieve financial performance targets.
• Prepare, present, and manage project budgets and cost estimates; report project performance.
• Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to the civil engineering practice; mentor less experienced engineers.
• Ensure adherence to QA/QC processes and effective communication with other engineering disciplines.
• Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program, or Bachelor of Science in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
• Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering may substitute for 1 year of experience.
• 7 years of civil engineering experience, consulting preferred.
• Department of Energy (DOE) experience preferred.
• Successful completion (i.e., passing) of FE or EIT exam preferred.
• Strong knowledge of standard civil engineering techniques and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment; demonstrated critical thinking skills.
• Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD, and/or hydraulic, hydrologic, pavement, and civil analysis programs).
• Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Schedule

Full-time position with flexible work options, including 6 weeks of remote work, flexible daily schedules, and 9/80 work weeks. Travel is required up to 25% of the time.
