Student Housing is a self-funded, large and complex campus department consisting of 6 housing communities and 3 support units, with more than 300 staff employees, 300-400 student employees and an annual operating budget of $120 million. Student Housing provides housing for approximately 9,000 undergraduates, graduate students and their families in over 250 buildings and approximately 3.3 million sq. ft. Currently, Student Housing houses 51% of UCI's enrolled students (in conjunction with American Campus Communities, UCI's 3rd party housing partner) with a goal of housing 60% as part of the campus Long Range Development Plan. Student Housing also provides maintenance and repair services to student residents.

About the Role

The Department of Student Housing builds, maintains and operates facilities that promote and support a learning-centered and resident-focused organization. Under the supervision of the Operations Supervisor, the incumbent has operational responsibility for the maintenance and repair of all buildings within Student Housing. The incumbent has assigned duties in multiple semi-skilled areas within the building trades to include: plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting and lock repair.

Responsibilities

• Follow, model and promote conduct that adheres to the University of California Principles of Community.
• Plumbing: Troubleshoot and analyze all interior and exterior plumbing problems. Operate a power and hand snake. Determine if plumbing problems should be referred to Facilities Management.
• Electrical: Troubleshoot and analyze problems with electrical systems. Knowledge of breaker systems and time clocks. Replace, repair, or install: light fixtures, outlets, switches, garbage disposals, heating systems and bathroom fans. Determine and advise supervisor if electrical job should be referred to Facilities Management.
• Carpentry: Perform minor interior and exterior carpentry projects. Skills in furniture repair, door and doorframe replacement, light framing, repair of wall patching and drywall, acoustical ceiling repair and floor tiling.
• Painting: Maintain the interior or exterior of assigned buildings. Prepare surfaces for application of paint materials. Apply paint, varnish, stains, enamel or lacquer to various interior and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers or spray equipment.
• Read and write English to submit written reports and work orders.
• Work as part of a team and serve as the work leader for a small group of Building Maintenance Workers, temporary staff or student staff.
• Operate a motor vehicle; requires a California driver’s license.
• Troubleshoot, repair and maintain electronic lock systems.
• Communicate in English—both verbally and in writing—for instruction and record keeping.
• Climb stairs and ladders.
• Pass a background check.
• Be on-call to respond to after-hours maintenance issues and emergencies.
• Assist in the event of a disaster.
• Lift and carry loads over 50 lbs.

Requirements

• Two or more years’ experience in building maintenance or a related position.
• Working knowledge of University policies and procedures.
• California driver’s license.

Special Conditions

• Available for overtime and weekend work. Work schedules are subject to change to meet department needs.
• Department may require overtime work to meet operational needs and can operate and assign custodial shifts seven days a week.

Pay

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $27.24 - $28.92 (hourly).
