Senior Anatomy Laboratory Technician

About the role

The Senior Laboratory Technician utilizes their surgical and procedural knowledge and expertise to provide expert professional services, including provision of required equipment and instrumentation, to support the needs of all Mayo and external educators, innovators and researchers.

The role supports the educational, clinical and research activities of the assigned laboratory, including preparing the environment, care and operation of equipment, instrument set-up, cleaning and sterilization, monitoring inventory of supplies and re-setting following an activity.

Responsibilities include handling cadaveric or animal tissue, communicating policies and procedures, assisting with data collection/management, disposing of hazardous waste, and supporting surgical procedures. In laboratories with a donor program, the technician provides general laboratory support including embalming, portioning and tissue management. In laboratories that work closely with simulation centers, the technician is cross-trained to support simulation activities.

The Senior Laboratory Technician maintains current knowledge of equipment and supplies, assists in equipment evaluation and ordering, provides training and mentorship to junior staff, and recommends updates to policies and procedures. The role also assists in scheduling laboratory space, tissue, and associated billing processes. Activities may require support outside of regular working hours, including evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert professional services and required equipment/instrumentation to support educators, innovators, and researchers.
• Prepare laboratory environments, operate and maintain equipment, and manage instrument set-up, cleaning, and sterilization.
• Monitor and manage inventory of supplies, and reset the laboratory following activities.
• Handle cadaveric or animal tissue, and manage tissue in donor programs (e.g., embalming, portioning).
• Communicate policies, procedures, and expectations to staff and external visitors.
• Assist with data collection, management, and disposal of hazardous waste according to protocols.
• Support surgical procedures and related activities as assigned.
• Cross-train to support simulation activities, including preparation and operation of simulation equipment.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and supplies, including vendor relationships.
• Assist in evaluating and ordering equipment, instrumentation, and supplies.
• Provide training and mentorship to junior staff on surgical techniques, equipment use, and sterile procedures.
• Proactively recommend updates to policies, procedures, and best practices for laboratory operations.
• Assist in scheduling laboratory space, tissue, and associated billing processes.
• Support activities outside of regular working hours, including evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in life science or healthcare-related field (or equivalent certification/program completion, e.g., Certified Surgical Tech, Military Surgical Tech, Surgical First Assistant) and five (5) years of surgical or procedural experience in a hospital, clinical, or pathology setting; OR
• Bachelor’s degree in life science or healthcare-related field and three (3) years of surgical or procedural experience in a hospital, clinical, or pathology setting.
• Relevant experience may include work in operating rooms, critical care, emergency medicine, bioskills/anatomy labs, willed body donation programs, medical examiner’s offices, veterinary clinics, or other hands-on procedural settings.
• Demonstrated proficiency in surgical/procedural techniques, instrumentation, specimen handling, and laboratory management.
• Strong problem-solving, organizational, and self-direction skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and adapt to unpredictable situations.
• Flexibility in work hours, including occasional off-hours, evenings, and weekends.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Preferred experience with animal procedures (for labs utilizing animal tissue).
• Preferred experience with simulation equipment (for labs working closely with simulation centers).

Licensure/Certification

Certified Surgical Technician, Certified Forensic Autopsy Technician, or Veterinary Technician license with surgical or dissection experience preferred.

Pay

$27.99 - $41.98 per hour.

Schedule

• Full Time: 80 hours per pay period.
• Schedule Details: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility to start early or leave late based on work unit needs.
• Weekend Schedule: Occasional weekend days.
