Senior Accounting Manager
Job Summary
The Senior Accounting Manager serves as a key technical expert within our Finance and Administration team. This role sits at the center of ensuring our accounts reflect the highest standards of accuracy, supporting our annual audit, managing restricted fund reporting, and overseeing accounting for our Canada affiliate. They work closely with the Controller and serve as their primary backup, with direct supervision of two accounting professionals.
Location
This is a remote role for anyone located in and authorized to work in the US, with core hours of 9 AM – 5 PM EST.
Reporting & Working Relationships
The Senior Accounting Manager reports to the Controller and works closely with Orbis staff in program branch offices, affiliates, and headquarters, providing guidance to staff reporting to the Controller on an as needed basis. The Senior Accounting Manager also manages the Accounting Specialist and the Senior Accountant.
Corporate Finance
Collaborate with the Controller to prepare timely and accurate monthly Financial Statements that reflect the accuracy and integrity of Orbis International accounts and records in compliance with GAAP, maintaining full ownership of the underlying records and reconciliations that support them.
Maintain supporting schedules and perform monthly reconciliation of temporarily restricted net asset balances.
Reconcile all restricted funds with Development, Director of Program Finance; Director of Financial Planning & Analysis; HQ grants, post to MIP as appropriate.
Absorb and manage invoicing to Canada, UK and Ireland affiliate offices.
Prepare and manage invoicing to Canada, UK and Ireland affiliate offices.
Perform monthly reconciliations and tasks which facilitate the monthly closing process; Credit card review, Accounts Receivables, pledges, affiliate finances, accrued expenses.
At fiscal yearend, reconcile restricted funds, deferred revenue (reclass as appropriate), releases from restrictions. Identify discrepancies or inefficiencies in financial processes and bring forward recommendations to the Controller.
Ensure Orbis's financial control systems are functioning as designed, working with the Controller to assess and make improvements to the financial controls as needed.
Compliance & Audit
Manage assigned PBC audit work papers and liaise with external auditors during the annual audit.
Collaborate with external auditors and provide regular updates to the Controller regarding audit progress and findings.
Coordinate and prepare Orbis’ Form 990, 990T and related schedules in a timely and efficient manner for Controller and CFO review.
Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, including GAAP and donor-specific requirements.
Stay up to date with changes in financial regulations and accounting standards and proactively address any potential impacts on the organization.
Affiliate Accounting - Canada
Provide guidance for all banking functions.
Ensure timely completion of GST filings and other deadline-driven Canada affiliate obligations.
Liaise with the leadership of Orbis affiliates to prepare financial reports for Board meetings.

Team Leadership & Development
Supervise and mentor two accounting professionals, providing guidance, training, and support to enhance their skills and knowledge.
Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment, promoting teamwork and professional growth within the department.
Crosstrain other members of the Finance team to ensure continuity of core accounting functions.
Set goals, provide consistent and meaningful feedback to team members on a regular basis, including engaging in quarterly goal alignment conversations and conducting annual performance evaluations.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and knowledge of general accepted accounting principles;
Minimum 8 years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years of experience supervising direct reports.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a non-profit fund accounting environment, with demonstrated hands-on experience managing restricted and temporarily restricted net assets.
Demonstrated direct experience coordinating or preparing Form 990 and 990T filings.
Demonstrated technical expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and regulatory compliance, evidenced by a track record of accurately applying these standards in financial reporting and ensuring adherence to compliance requirements.
Skills & Abilities
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to effectively interact with senior management and individuals with varying degrees of financial knowledge.
Proficient in utilizing a wide range of financial software systems and tools, including MS Word, Excel, MIP, Access, PowerPoint, MS Outlook, and demonstrates an ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and accounting software.

Prior experience with Abila MIP preferred.
Prior experience with systems implementations preferred.
