Senior Accountant, Sales Tax

Established North Charlotte organization with a long-standing presence and multiple operating businesses across the Southeast. Join a collaborative shared services tax function supporting a complex, multistate organization. Work as part of a five-person tax team with direct access to experienced tax and accounting leadership. Location
North Charlotte. Flexible hybrid schedule with three days in the office and two days remote.
What You Will Do
- Own the preparation and filing of sales and use tax returns across multiple entities and jurisdictions.
- Manage customer exemption certificates and ensure accurate exempt status within Vertex and related systems.
- Partner directly with operations and credit teams to resolve sales tax questions, billing disputes, and exemption issues.
- Review use tax activity, identify incorrect accruals, and reconcile sales and use tax accounts.
- Support sales tax reserve calculations, indirect tax registrations, and jurisdictional compliance.
- Coordinate indirect tax audits across sales tax, excise tax, and other applicable areas.
- Monitor multistate activity and identify new registration and filing requirements as the business evolves.
- Participate in the Vertex Use Tax implementation, future ERP upgrades, system integrations, testing, training, and change management.
- Identify opportunities to improve existing processes through technology, automation, Alteryx, and AI-enabled workflows.
This role offers ownership of the organization's day-to-day multistate sales and use tax function, exposure to a complex multistate business with a variety of indirect tax matters, and the ability to play an active role in a Vertex Use Tax implementation and future systems integrations. You will have the opportunity to leverage tools including Vertex, SAP, Alteryx, and AI to improve processes and automate existing workflows, with potential to take a lead role in future Vertex integrations and upgrades based on experience and interest.
Requirements
- Hands-on multistate sales and use tax experience with the ability to independently manage the day-to-day function.
- Ideally 5+ years of relevant tax experience, although the team is flexible based on the depth and quality of sales tax exposure.
- Experience with exemption certificates, sales and use tax filings, reconciliations, registrations, and indirect tax compliance.
- Broader tax backgrounds are welcomed when sales and use tax has been a meaningful component of the individual's responsibilities.
- Experience working in industry, public accounting, or consulting environments can translate well.
- Strong professional judgment with the ability to resolve routine issues independently and appropriately escalate more complex matters.
- Comfortable working with technology and interested in process improvement, automation, and changing systems.
- Vertex experience is helpful but not required; SAP experience is beneficial.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
